A.C.T.'s 2014 Season Gala Raises Over $670K for Actor Training and Arts Education Programs

With the help of students from the Master of Fine Arts and Young Conservatory programs, American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) raised over $670,000 at its 2014 Season Gala, FLEISHHACKER, MAGNIN, SWIG -- A.C.T.'s MAD, MAD MEN, which honored the three founding fathers of A.C.T. -- Mortimer Fleishhacker, Jr., Cyril Magnin, and Melvin Swig -- and celebrated the past, present, and future of the organization. The Gala took place on Sunday, May 18, at the historic Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. The proceeds from the Gala support A.C.T.'s actor training and arts education programs.

American Conservatory Theater announced today the Spring 2014 Repertory featuring students from A.C.T.'s acclaimed Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) Program, as well as a coproduction featuring students from A.C.T.'s Young Conservatory (YC) Program. The three works in repertory this May are Stephen Adly Guirgis' scorching comedy, Our Lady of 121st Street; Georges Feydeau's madcap farce The Girl from Maxim's; and Rob Ackerman's hilarious and heartbreaking Teach for America. Tickets for each performance are $20 and are available online at www.act-sf.org or by calling the A.C.T. Box Office at 415.749.2228. Two and three-show packages are available. Eve Ensler's groundbreaking show, The Vagina Monologues, will return in a new form when the first New York City revival opens for a Spanish language engagement at its original off-Broadway home. Los Monologos de la Vagina will begin performances at the Westside Theatre (407 West 43rd Street) on May 6 . Opening night will be announced. Mexican director Jaime Matarredona helms the production. It is produced by Morris Gilbert and Federico Gonzalez Compean. This will mark the first time that a mainstream off-Broadway theatre has hosted a commercial Spanish language play for an ongoing run.

The producers of HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL, the new stage adaptation of Daniel Waters' iconic 1989 dark comedy film, have announced that The Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 has chosen HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL as their first foray into producing a New York stage production. Their newest initiative, Hasty Pudding Presents, is a production arm whose mission is to develop the Hasty Pudding franchise by backing performing arts endeavors consistent with its unique 200 year old brand.

Butoh meets Film Noir when dancer/choreographer Vangeline presents her Vangeline Theater in the premiere of '5th', a new butoh sci-fi fantasy of 5 dances about the 5th: 5th dimension, 5th element, 5th position, 5th amendment, and 5th of Beethoven. Each dance also represents one of the five elements in Japanese philosophy: Earth, Water, Wind, Fire and Void. Joining the Company for this special season are guests Shoshana Green, San Francisco-based Butoh artist, ballet dancer Sakie Hachiya of New York, and Ysanne Spevack, English composer/performer and member of The Smashing Pumpkins. Three performances, February 7-9 at 8 PM at Brooklyn's Triskelion Arts, 118 North 11th Street.
