Kimmel Center President and CEO Anne Ewers announced today that The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts has received a grant from the William Penn Foundation to be used primarily for general operating support with a small portion dedicated to capital expenditures. The City of Philadelphia's Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) released new research on creative sector employment in the City of Philadelphia for 2011. The research indicates 48,900 jobs exist in the creative sector, which represents 6.5% of the jobs in Philadelphia, or one-in-fifteen jobs. Creative sector employment grew 6.3% from 2001 to 2011, yielding $5 billion in direct output and $2.7 billion in direct employee earnings.
Mayor Nutter announced that the City of Philadelphia's Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) will receive a $200,000 grant from ArtPlace, a new national collaboration of foundations, banks and federal agencies formed to accelerate creative place-making across the U.S. OACCE is one of three organizations in Philadelphia receiving support in 2012: University City District (UCD) and Asian Arts Initiative are also receiving ArtPlace support for their place-making projects.

With $11.2 million in outright gifts and pledges and an additional $16.3 million pledged as challenge grants to inspire philanthropic support from our community, this initial funding signals an important vote of confidence in the plan being launched by the Orchestra. To fully meet these challenge grants - and to fund the first three years of its plan - The Philadelphia Orchestra must secure an additional $17.5 million in contributions by the close of 2011. This effort will take place concurrently with the Orchestra's Annual Fund campaign.
