PlayPenn to Host 9th Annual New Play Development Conference, 7/12-28

PlayPenn, Philadelphia's professional new play development organization, will hold its ninth annual New Play Development Conference from July 12-28 at the Adrienne Theater (2030 Sansom Street) in Philadelphia. The Conference will feature two-and-a-half weeks of intensive work on six works-in-progress by Gabriel Jason Dean (Terminus); Lisa Dillman (No Such Thing); Deborah Zoe Laufer (Informed Consent); Peter Gil-Sheridan (Cockfight); James Ijames (A Thousand Kinds of Silence); and Joe Waechter (Profiles).

Delaware River Waterfront Corporation Opens First Segment of Delaware River Trail

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) achieved a key milestone in implementing the Central Delaware Master Plan and transforming the Delaware River waterfront into a walkable and bikeable destination as Mayor Michael A. Nutter and other local officials officially opened the first permanent segment of the Delaware River trail. The trail is the first of its kind in the city in providing a 12' bi-directional bikeway separated from a 10' pedestrian walkway, all buffered from the street by plantings and a curb. The trail also marks an important stride toward Mayor Nutter's promise in founding DRWC to develop a trail along the Central Delaware River.

Redmoon Receives $250,000 Grant from ArtPlace America for Great Chicago Fire Festival

ArtPlace America announces today the award of a $250,000 grant to Redmoon, the large-scale spectacle and public art group, for the Great Chicago Fire Festival, a new festival that will culminate in a procession of illuminated floating fiberglass sculptures as well as a fire spectacle on the main branch of the Chicago River. The Great Chicago Fire Festival was chosen from over 1,200 applications as an exceptional example of creative placemaking.

ArtPlace America Donates $350K to Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center and O Cinema

ArtPlace America, one of the nation's largest organizations committed to creative place-making, is investing $350,000 in new grant dollars for culturally-based development and programming in Miami's urban core. The Adrienne Arsht Center has been awarded a $250,000 grant to establish an Office of Neighborhood Development in association with the Town Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (TSNDC), making it one of the first performing arts centers in the country to have an office dedicated to the development of its surrounding community. O Cinema, Miami's premiere venue for independent, foreign, and art films, has been awarded $100,000 for the development of Cine Al Fresco, a sustainable green space and outdoor theater in Wynwood. ArtPlace America selected the organizations from a pool of more than 1,200 applicants.

Rennie Harris' RHAW Grooves at New Victory Theatre, Now thru 5/26

Dr. Rennie Harris, Alvin Ailey Award recipient and renowned choreographer, returns to the New Victory stage (Legends of Hip-Hop, New Vic 2004, 2006; Puremovement, New Vic 1999) to inspire the next generation of hip-hoppers with Rennie Harris Awe-Inspiring Works-RHAW. Featuring a hip-hop dance theater company of talented young dancers, RHAW delivers straight- up Philly soul and fresh spins on classic street dance styles, creating depictions of city life and young love. Rennie Harris' RHAW, will run at The New Victory Theater, 209 West 42nd Street from tonight, May 17 through the 26th.

PIFA 2013 Continues Throughout April

As a city of "firsts," Philadelphia is no stranger to the spotlight. From the first Zoo to the first library, park, bank, university and many others, Philadelphia's history is filled with cultural highlights. Now, in tribute to the 2013 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts and its If You Had a Time Machine…. theme, several PIFA partner organizations are showcasing many illustrious Philadelphia moments in time during the festival, continuing in locations throughout the city until April 27.

The Delaware Theatre Company (DTC) has announced the culmination of the 2012-2013 Delaware Young Playwrights Festival (DYPF). This year's festival concludes at DTC this evening, February 25, 2013 with a showcase of scenes and an awards ceremony honoring the playwrights of the six finalist plays and recognizing all 116 of the high school playwrights who participated in this year's DYPF.
