The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents Kate Evans: Threads, an evening with Evans, the acclaimed author, cartoonist, and activist on September 29 at 7:30pm in the Telus Studio Theatre as part of the Beyond Words series. Evans will reveal accounts of hope and hardship from France's Calais refugee camp as told in her 2017 graphic novel Threads: From the Refugee Crisis. With projected images from her book as the backdrop, and musical accompaniment by Iranian-Canadian hand drummer Hamin Honari, Evans will share a reading followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion. The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in partnership with The Dance Centre, presents Words in Motion, March 18 & 19, 7:30pm, in the Telus Studio Theatre. This innovative series explores the power of words in performance - both as an agent of change, and as a means of igniting important dialogue. Vancouver-based authors Carmen Aguirre, Aislinn Hunter, and Nancy Lee pair with diverse choreographers, Anusha Fernando, Olivia C. A new twist on the popular literary series' mandate to 'ignite conversation' through words and performance, this original collaboration weaves readings from Galloway's latest acclaimed novel The Confabulist - a beautiful, suspense-filled tale about the life and sudden death of turn-of-the-century magician and stunt performer Harry Houdini - with astounding live illusions presented by Gifford.
