The new production--which came from the Theatre an der Wien in Vienna--at Barcelona's beautiful Liceu opera house is by Lotte de Beer, a Dutch director who's known for taking outrageous approaches to standard rep.

New Rochelle Opera Presents LA TRAVIATA

New Rochelle Opera, Westchester's longest running opera company, will present Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, from June 20-23, 2019 in the Frank J. Auriana Theatre at the Ursuline School, 1354 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY. The production will be directed by Company co-founder and artistic director Camille Coppola, with orchestra and chorus conducted by Brian Holman. The opera will be sung in Italian, with English supertitles.

Distinguished Soprano Christina Major To Perform With Morris Choral Society May 18 and 19

The Morris Choral Society is pleased to announce that soprano Christina Major will perform as featured soloist in its upcoming Spring Concert "Greatest Hits from Opera and Broadway" in two performances Saturday May 18 at 8:00pm and Sunday May 19 at 3:00pm at the historic United Methodist Church on the Green in Morristown, New Jersey. MCS Music Director Jason Tramm will lead the distinguished Morris Choral Society and guest soloist Christina Major in a concert of unforgettable music written by the greatest composers of Opera and Broadway.  Due to a conflict, Christina Major will replace Susanne Burgess in the program.

BWW Review: MN Opera Portrays Sacrifices for Love in Magnificent LA TRAVIATA

Opening on the past Saturday night at the Ordway Center, MN Opera staged a magnificent production of Giuseppe Verdi's 1853 Opera La Traviata. Verdi's breathtaking love and death opera accompanied by Francesco Maria Piave's libretto was adapted after Alexander Dumas' 'Lady of the Camellias' or 'La Dame aux Camelias. In Verdi's reimagining of the Dumas novel, his music showcases the prodigious talents and voice of the protagonist, Violetta. For the company's opening night, Nicole Cabel masterfully sang the challenging operatic role.

Soprano Lisette Oropesa Wins The Met's 2019 Beverly Sills Artist Award

The Metropolitan Opera has named soprano Lisette Oropesa as the winner of the 14th annual Beverly Sills Artist Award. The $50,000 award is given to extraordinarily gifted singers with rising Met careers. Given in honor of the legendary American soprano Beverly Sills, the award was established in 2006 by an endowment gift from the late Agnes Varis, a managing director on the Met's Board of Directors.

Opera Grand Rapids Presents LA TRAVIATA

Opera Grand Rapids' highly-acclaimed 51st season will draw to a close with one of the greatest operas of all time - Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata. The heartbreaking true story of Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis that inspired the films Camille, Pretty Woman, and Moulin Rouge will delight audiences June 14 and 15, 7:30 pm at the St Cecilia Musical Center.

VH1 today announced Grammy Award®-winning, multi-platinum recording artists and TV personalities T.I., Tameka 'Tiny' Harris, and Monica, along with Grammy Award®-nominee Luke James will all appear on its annual “Dear Mama: A Love Letter to Mom” premiering on Monday, May 6th at 10PM ET/PT. It was also announced Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominee Anthony Anderson and New York Times best-selling author and Actress La La Anthony will return to co-host the special.

Sarasota Opera To Present 'Opera Composers In Song'

On Friday, May 10 at 7:30 pm, the historic Sarasota Opera House will be filled with exquisite songs written by well-known opera composers. Soprano Elizabeth Tredent (the title roles in Rita and Susanna's Secret, Violetta in La traviata), tenor Matthew Vickers (Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, Avito in The Love of Three Kings), and baritone Marco Nistico (Giorgio Germont in La traviata, Amonasro in Aida) will be accompanied on the piano by John F. Spencer IV. The program will represent a musical journey through time-from a Mozart song set to the words of Goethe to a song Richard Strauss composed as a gift to his wife the day before their wedding in 1894. The songs will be performed in their original languages of Italian, French, German, and Russian, with translations provided.

Utah Opera Announces 2019-20 Season

Utah Opera Artistic Director Christopher McBeth has announced the programming, initial casting, and creative teams for the company's 2019-20 season, which comprises four opera productions at the newly renovated Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. Featuring improved seating and sightlines on the orchestra level, the theatre reopens after a six-month closure for the company's season-opening production of Verdi's La traviata in October 2019. The season continues with composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell's Silent Night in January 2020, Rossini's The Barber of Seville in March 2020, and Massenet's Tha s in May 2020. Silent Night is presented as part of Utah Opera's American Opera Initiative, through which the company champions and commissions American contributions to the art form. Both Silent Night and Tha s are Utah Opera premieres.

CSO To Perform Mozart's REQUIEM

CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov leads the Columbus Symphony, Columbus Symphony Chorus, and four brilliant guest vocalists in a haunting and enigmatic performance of Mozart's last and unfinished masterpiece. This emotional journey is preceded by a clever piece by composer Mason Bates that combines technology and live sound to depict an orchestra of historic instruments.

BWW Review: LA TRAVIATA at Lyric Opera Of Chicago

As with most tales of doomed romance, Giuseppe Verdi's LA TRAVIATA highlights the contrasts between two social spheres and the difficulties faced by lovers who try to bridge this chasm. In this 1853 opera, based on a play by Alexandre Dumas, fils, the beautiful courtesan Violetta Valery (Albina Shagimuratova) tries to escape her past life among the hedonistic upper classes of Paris to settle down with her true love, Alfredo Germont (Giorgio Berrugi). After a brief period of bliss, the couple is driven apart by the strict bourgeois morality of Alfredo's family, in particular his father, who refuses to overlook Violetta's shameful past until she is on her deathbed.

Tulsa Opera Announces 2019/2020 Season

General Director Ken McConnell and Artistic Director Tobias Picker today announced Tulsa Opera's 72nd season comprising classics such as Bizet's Carmen and Puccini's Madama Butterfly, and a new production of Mr. Picker's 1996 opera Emmeline, to be performed in Oklahoma for the first time, and led by Mr. Picker in his opera-conducting debut.
