Teacher Al D'Andrea and his students will use a variety of games, exercises, techniques and improvisations to take an in-depth look at how to develop and embody a character in a play from the ground up with both imagination and authenticity. Major aspects of character that will be explored include character wants and needs, attitudes, traits, physicality and emotional life, as well as how and why a character moves, speaks, thinks, feels, engages in physical activities, and pursues actions and objectives in a particular way.

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and The Second City, the country's leading improv comedy troupe, today announced a partnership that adds Newark to Hollywood, Toronto and Chicago as a training site for the revered company's comedy improvisation workshops for aspiring comedians of all ages. The courses, to be held in NJPAC's Center for Arts Education in August 2014, will include two sets of classes for teens, one with curriculum specifically designed for students with the Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as a course for adults. With this program, NJPAC adds the comedy genre to its arts education offerings, allowing students to explore the fundamentals of improvisation as they study the same building blocks of scene-work used on Second City's stages by the likes of Mike Myers, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey. Registration begins in January 2014 at www.njpac.org.
Director E. M. Edwards, who was an original Company Member when PIE first premiered in New York City's Central Park in the summer of 1991, will helm both programs. Cast in the core company are: Molly Mermelstein, Maiya Reaves, Michael Sheehan, Margen Soliman, and Jake Winn. The swings are David Delaney and Jennifer Polansky. Margen Soliman will also serve as Company Manager.

The Spolin Players Improvisational troupe is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Viola Spolin (known as 'The High Priestess of Improv') by performing her theatre games at The Hollywood Fringe Festival. The Second City will host a free event celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Playwrights Theatre Club on Sunday, June 23, 2013 in UP Comedy Club (230 W. North Ave, 2nd Floor of Piper's Alley) at 3:00 p.m. This special event will reunite the original members of The Playwrights Theatre Club, which was the precursor to The Compass and The Second City.
