BWW Reviews: THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG at Forum Theatre

The Forum Theatre's latest production, They're Playing Our Song, is a sweet melody. With direction my Tom Frye and music direction by Steve Rue, enjoy a tuneful romp before it's too late.

BWW Reviews: They're Playing Our (Grandparents) Song at Winter Park Playhouse

Vernon Gersch, a 70's songwriter, is a punctual and sarcastic stick in the mud and Sonia Walsk practices candor and tardiness. So when he proposes to join forces with Sonia it is clear from the start that these two are going to make a comedically disastrous pairing. A score by Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager and jokes by Neil Simon, THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG is a passe musical about the real-life relationship of Hamlisch and Sager. It is also The Winter Park Playhouse's third show of the season, conveniently starring the Company's Executive and Artistic Directors.

BWW Reviews: THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG Shines at Stages St. Louis

I've always been curious about THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG, but I'd never had the chance to see it before. You have to be intrigued by the fact that prolific playwright Neil Simon wrote the book, and also because Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, who are responsible, together and separately, for some of the biggest hits to come out of the 1970's and early 80's, wrote the score. So, I'm here to report that the current production by Stages St. Louis is a delightful romantic comedy filled with catchy tunes that would make a perfect "date night" for couples.

Photo Flash: Meet the Cast of THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG — Revival

- 9 Works Theatrical, which produced last year's professional theater production of Clark Gesner's '60s musical comedy "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown," is currently working on a revival production of Marvin Hamlisch and Carol Bayer Sager's late '70s hit Broadway musical "They're Playing Our Song," which pairs up for the first time TV and recording artist Nikki Gil (who plays disorganized, quirky lyricist Sonia Walsk) and veteran stage actor Lorenz Martinez (who plays accomplished composer Vernon Gersch). Tony winner Lea Salonga and Singaporean actor/director Adrian Pang played Walsk and Gersch respectively in a previous local production of "They're Playing Our Song."

BWW Reviews: Reprise Opens 14th Season with Vibrant SONG

It's the late 70s. Oversized mockup stereo speakers adorn both sides of the Freud stage as part of the set for They're Playing Our Song. At opening curtain Jason Alexander enters, not to start the scene, but to give the downbeat as conductor of the overture. The back part of the set that serves as a window and skyline of New York City converts to a screen and the audience is treated to a retrospective slide show of 70s pop culture. Redford and Newman, Sonny and Cher, Lee Majors and Farrah, Ron Howard and Henry Winkler as Fonzie, Charlie's Angels...the list goes on. A fun and flavorful beginning to a wonderfully nostalgic evening of theatre that marks the first production of Reprise's 14th season.
