South Florida Theatre League Sets Summer Theatre Fest Activities

The Theatre League's Summer Theatre Fest has become an integral part of South Florida's cultural landscape, and this year, South Florida audiences will once again have the opportunity to see theatre for free, check out new plays in development by South Florida playwrights, and tell the world what the arts - and theatre - mean to them. The success of last summer's Come Under Our Umbrella program and play reading series indicated to the League that theatre patrons are ready and willing to try new theatrical experiences, and even cross county lines to do it.

This isn't some clandestine meeting or a glimpse at illegal storage-container-living -- this is Salsa, a fifteen minute short by Glenn Hutchinson, smartly directed by Ivan R. Lopez and eloquently performed by Hutchinson himself, and Evelyn Perez. Salsa is part of Miami's newest sensation -- 'micro teatro' or 'micro theater' -- an experiment in theater going.

Directed by Rob Reiner and featuring an all-star cast that includes Kevin Bacon, George Clooney, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christine Lahti, Jane Lynch, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen and John C. Reilly, "8" will air on public radio stations across the U.S. this week, beginning June 9.

The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact have announced the addition of Golden Globe-winner and Academy and Emmy Award-nominee Brad Pitt to the cast of the West Coast premiere reading of the play '8.' The reading is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by AFER to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the right to marry. Watch the video announcement below.
