The NBR New Zealand Opera's restaging of Daniel Slater's ground-breaking Opera North production of Smetana's The Bartered Bride, opening in Auckland on 22 September and Wellington on 13 October, dispenses with the folkloric cliches normally associated with this opera in favour of an updated setting in the Czechoslovakia of 1972, four years after the Prague Spring.

The Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire was awarded the Extraordinary Excellence in Diversity on Broadway Award for the 2011-2012 Season from Actors' Equity Association (AEA) on Tuesday. The show, produced by Front Row Productions (Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones-Harvey), received the honor at a presentation at Equity headquarters. Christine Toy Johnson and Julia Breanetta Simpson (AEA Co-chairs Eastern Regional Equal Employment Opportunity Committee) presented the award, which turns the spotlight onto those doing exemplary work to promote the goals of diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity in theatre.

Strand Releasing will release a new documentary called BALLPLAYER: PELOTERO about the underbelly of baseball recruiting in the Dominican Republic in theaters and on VOD today, July 13th. The film is directed by Ross Finkel, Trevor Martin and Jon Paley, and narrated by John Leguizamo and executive produced by Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine.
