BWW Critic's Choices: Best of Maine 2015

The theatrical scene continued to be lively in Maine this year, with the Portland-area theatres presenting a number of stunning world premieres and the musical theatre scene gloriously vibrant. These are my personal choices of the best in Maine, grouped by theatre company and show: Because their repertoires are so vastly different, and because both companies produced outstanding seasons, my vote for highest honors goes to both Maine State Music Theatre and the Good Theater.

BWW Review: Portland Stage's DANCING AT LUGHNASA Plumbs Realm of Memory

Portland Stage opened its 2015-2016 season with a thought-provoking production of Irish playwright Brian Friel's award-winning drama Dancing at Lughnasa, a wistful memory play about a matriarchal family in County Donegal in 1936. Commonly considered Friel's masterpiece, the drama examines the narrow, restricted lives of the Mundy sisters, constrained by poverty, unfulfilled dreams, and the conventions of Catholicism, as recounted by Michael, the 'love child' of one of the sisters, Christina, who tells the story from the dual perspective of a seven-year-old child and a grown man three decades later.

BWW Review: Shanley's Irrepressible OUTSIDE MULLINGAR Debuts at Peninsula Players

A tiny village named Killucan set in contemporary Ireland ignites family fueds and past ghosts in an irrepressible production titled Outside Mullingar at Peninsula Players Theatre. John Patrick Shanley's 2014 play flames the deep fires of hearth and heath burning in his four Irish characters: Tony Reilly, and his son, Anthony, and then their next door neighbors, Aoife Muldoon, and her daughter, Rosemary.

BWW Reviews: MULLINGAR OF OUR MINDS

So saying, the plot of John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar shows just disheartening it is when four characters are discovered to have been strangers for so long due to those undisclosed feelings that have eaten away at their souls for so long; when the time for changes arises, the obstacles which arise and the way in which each character reacts makes this such an epic story. How disheartening it is for four people to have lived over the last few years with the "what is" as the unchanging doctrine of their reality, living in anticipation of something that may or may not come and meandering in this life until fate sticks her ugly hand in to change the bleak, unmoving world that such characters inhabit. Yet, how beautiful it is to see four wildly talented actors bring such inner turmoil to a head in Cape Rep's current production of Shanley's epic play.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Closes Season with OUTSIDE MULLINGAR, Now thru 5/24

Pack your bags and grab your passport! Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati's closes its 29th season with an adventure across the pond in the regional premiere of Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanely, one the most celebrated contemporary playwrights. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® for his play Doubt and an Academy Award for his film Moonstruck, he is also the screenwriter and director of the cult classic Joe Versus the Volcano. Outside Mullingar takes audiences to lush Ireland with a charming story of two families and their journey with fate as the vast countryside teaches them about identity, heritage, and love. Join ETC as Irish banter, family loyalty, and Guinness (of course!) floods the stage in this romantic comedy, playing today, May 5-24, 2015.

BWW Reviews: Adorably Bittersweet OUTSIDE MULLINGAR at Seattle Rep

John Patrick Shanley may be best known for his incredibly thought provoking play 'Doubt' but there's an almost romantic comedy side to his writing as well. I say 'almost' as I would never want to put his quirky, flawed characters looking for love (like the ones in his Oscar winning screenplay 'Moonstruck') in the same boat as standard romantic comedy. And that off kilter romance has found its way onto the Seattle Rep stage with his latest piece 'Outside Mullingar', showing that his adorably bittersweet style is alive and well.
