Blumenthal Performing Arts has joined forces with Jazz Arts Initiative to bring a premiere jazz festival to the Queen City. Charlotte Classic Jazz Festival 2014 will take place Saturday, October 4, in Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts (430 South Tryon Street).
The National Tour of THE GERSHWINS' PORGY AND BESS, winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, ends on a high note grossing $1,030,014 for the week closing July 20, 2014, making it the highest-grossing week on the tour. More than 15,000 people attended the show in Charlotte.

As an actor and a theater student, I take pride in the work of the theater department in my school. I went to the Blumey Awards this year, and I saw many students from schools all over Charlotte, who showed the same enthusiasm and love for theater. The Blumey Awards presented by Wells Fargo, is a great award event to showcase the talent and hard work put forth into each high school musical. This show was created by Tom Gabbard, President of Blumenthal Performing Arts, produced and co-directed by Ralph Beck, Education Director of Blumenthal Performing Arts and Michelle Youngs, Education Program Manager of Blumenthal Performing Arts. They did an outstanding job.
The third annual Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards culminated Sunday, May 18, at a gala award celebration where winners in 12 categories were announced and nominees for Best Actor, Best Actress and Wells Fargo Best Musical performed live on stage at the Belk Theater. Disney's THE LION KING celebrated a sold-out engagement in Charlotte, breaking the Belk Theater's box office record for highest-grossing week when it grossed $1,399,576 for the week ending September 1, 2013. The triumphant four-week return grossed over $5.5 million at the box office and entertained more than 63,000 patrons (one of the 33 sold-out performances entirely benefited The Actors Fund, a national human services organization that helps all professionals in performing arts and entertainment). This was THE LION KING's third sold-out engagement in Charlotte, following a five-week premiere in 2003, and a six-week return in 2007 at the Belk Theater.
CLEAR, a new American musical by Paul Oakley Stovall (book, music and lyrics) will receive a reading in NYC on August 27th. Stafford Arima (Carrie, Altar Boyz) directs, with musical direction by Brad Simmons (Lysistrata Jones). CLEAR was first developed at the 2010 Eugene O'Neill National Music Theatre Conference, and has also received workshop productions at Dixon Place, About Face Theatre, and a concert reading at Pritzker Pavilion for the city of Chicago's IN THE WORKS program.
The Charlotte return of Disney's THE LION KING opens tonight, Thursday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Belk Theater for a limited engagement of four weeks through September 1. In Charlotte, THE LION KING plays Tuesday through Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Both sites are portals to information about and tickets to performing arts events and activities coming to the six theaters Blumenthal Performing Arts manages in Center City Charlotte, as well as to other performing venues in the region who ticket through the CarolinaTix system.
Blumenthal Performing Arts is opening McGlohon Theater in response to the change of venue for tonight's DNC event from Bank of America Stadium to Time Warner Cable Arena. The much smaller arena will not be able to accommodate many people who had planned to attend the event at the stadium.
