Matrix Theatre Presents NO CHILD..., Now thru 10/13
by BWW News Desk
- Sep 20, 2013
Anyone concerned about the future of urban education in the U.S. will want to see No Child… by Nilaja Sun. This thought-provoking play examines the effect a young teaching artist has on a sophomore class in a failing inner city school. She's been charged with teaching the students drama and ultimately producing a performance of Our Country's Good over her six-week residency there. Deftly performed by actors Morgan Breon and Sunkari Clifford Sykes, Sun's play combines humor and heartbreak to take a realistic but optimistic look at the plight of urban education and the future of not only its students but our entire country. These stories are told through the eyes of 16 different characters - teachers, students, parents, administrators, a janitor, and a security guard - 15 of which are played by Ms. Breon, and 1 played by Sykes. The play runs from September 20 through October 13. Today and Saturday performances begin at 8 pm, with Sunday performances at 3 pm. A Talkback with community members and/or educators will follow each performance. All productions are presented at Matrix Theatre located at 2730 Bagley in the heart of Detroit's Mexicantown. Ticket prices are $20 for general admission and $15 for students and senior citizens (65+) with proper ID. Group rates are available. For further information, and to purchase tickets, call 313 967 0599, or go to www. matrixtheatre.org.

BWW Reviews: KAT'S CABARET is Rockin' and Eclectic and Fun...and I want more!
by Lauren Gienow
- Sep 13, 2013
In a Canadian town like Stratford, Ontario that is known for formally presenting incredible live talent on a daily basis, it's always fun when some of those talented people involved (as well as their talented friends) come together for a less-formal celebration of all kinds of music (and even some dance). This is what current Stratford Festival performer Katrina Reynolds has put together for KAT'S CABARET; a series of cabarets that have taken place in Stratford this summer. Her more chilled, out, acoustic cabarets have been held at an intimate restaurant with a rustic feel (Montforte on Wellington), and for loud rock and roll themed cabarets, Molly Bloom's Irish Pub has been the venue of choice. The roster of performers is ever-changing and always impressive, allowing for a fun night out that no one should miss!

Her eclectic musical style combines elements of soul, blues, rock 'n' roll, gospel, funk and country music. Accompanied by bass, guitar, drums and keyboard, this Grammy Award nominee has earned superstar accolades for her new album, Thankful and Thoughtful. This soul sensation and 2012 Blues Music Award winner has The New York Times raving that LaVette "now rivals Aretha Franklin as her generation's most vital soul singer," and her velvet-rich voice and gospel-based blues have earned the admiration of everyone from Paul McCartney to Bonnie Raitt and Elvis Costello. On Thursday, November 7, at 8 p.m., this accomplished artist will entertain at The Ridgefield Playhouse. To enhance this evening of jazz, a wine and cheese tasting by No. 109 Cheese & Wine starts at 7:15 p.m. with an art exhibit and artist's reception.
