BWW Review: Langston Hughes' Poetry Comes Alive at Metrostage

Politics can be the graveyard of the poet. And only Poetry can be his resurrection. Langston Hughes, 1964 These words by the great Langston Hughes adorn the backdrop of Metrostage's moving production of Carlyle Brown's Are you now, or have you ever been Waiting for the play to begin the audience is left to ponder these words and how they frame the action on stage. Politics and the arts have had a difficult time coexisting during certain eras, particularly during the Army-McCarthy hearings of 1953-54, which colloquially known as McCarthyism. The 90 minute intermission-less play takes place on the eve of Mr. Hughes testimony to the committee and the committee hearing itself. The evening before the hearing, Mr. Hughes is struggling to comprehend his subpoena to the hearings while attempting to write the poem, Georgia Dusk .

San Diego Rep Announces Cast of BLACK PEARL SINGS!

San Diego Repertory Theatre (San Diego REP) has announced details for the fourth production of its 42nd season, Black Pearl Sings! This intimate play with music, from playwright Frank Higgins, will be helmed by Thomas W. Jones II. Black Pearl Sings! begins on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 and plays through Sunday, December 17, 2017 with an opening night on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Lyceum Space Theatre at San Diego REP in Horton Plaza.

Langston Hughes Play ARE YOU NOW OR HOW YOU EVER BEEN... Opens at MetroStage

Producing Artistic Director Carolyn Griffin is pleased to announce that the play Are You Now or Have You Ever Been , a play written and conceived by Carlyle Brown and directed by MetroStage Artistic Associate Thomas W. Jones II with original music by William Knowles, will be in performance Oct. 5-Nov. 5 at MetroStage.

This weekend you can see his directorial work with a three-day return engagement of Anne & Emmett. Performances are this Friday, July 28 (8:00 PM) through Sunday, July 30 (3:00 PM). There are two performances on Saturday, July 29 - one at 3:00 PM and one at 8:00 PM).

Mixed Blood Theatre today announced the cast for SAFE AT HOME-a site specific theatrical event performed at CHS Field in St. Paul. 2017 Helen Hayes Award Nominations Announced; COME FROM AWAY Nabs 14 Nominations

The 2017 Helen Hayes Award nominations were announced tonight. A line-up of leading theatre artists announced nominations in 47 categories of artistic excellence. Award recipients will be announced at the Helen Hayes Awards gala event to be held at the Lincoln Theatre on Monday, May 15 with an after-party hosted at Washington's legendary 9:30 Club.
