On Thursday, June 16, the San Francisco Opera honored Company General Director David Gockley with a gala evening and concert titled Celebrating David! Many of the leading artists from the world of opera gathered to honor one of the great careers in the modern history of the art form. Gockley, who in 2014 announced that he would retire from his position as General Director at the completion of the 2015-16 Season on July 31, has led a storied career of more than 40 years as an opera impresario.

In celebration of what would be renowned choral director and conductor Robert Shaw's 100th birthday, Carnegie Hall will make newly-digitized videos encompassing eight years' worth of landmark choral workshops led by Mr. Shaw at the Hall during the 1990s, available online for free for the first time, allowing viewers around the world the opportunity to observe this master musician and teacher at work.
Earth Day has come and gone in 2016, but symphonic orchestra audiences in New York have lots to remember from this year's celebration, with performances of Mahler's DAS LIED VON DER ERDE (SONG OF THE EARTH). In less than a week, we had two different versions of the piece, with differing pluses and minuses: First, the San Francisco Symphony, under its music director, Michael Tilson Thomas performed the work at Carnegie Hall, then Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic had the home court advantage at Lincoln Center's Geffen Hall.

Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic in a Tribute to Kurt Masur, taking place at the 25th Annual Free Memorial Day Concert, a tradition inaugurated in 1992 by the late Music Director Emeritus Kurt Masur (1927-2015) as a gift to the people of New York City. The concert will feature a performance of Brahms's Symphony No. 2, as well as addresses from Music Director Alan Gilbert; trumpet player and Jazz at Lincoln Center artistic and managing director Wynton Marsalis, who will also perform; and baritone Thomas Hampson, who will also perform. The free concert will take place on Monday, May 30, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine.

Following the success of their concert performances and subsequent recording of Bernstein's West Side Story, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Fransisco Symphony will present Leonard Bernstein's musical On the Town May 25-29. ?After a months-long series of competitions at the district, regional, and national levels, a panel of expert judges named five young singers as the winners of the nation's most prestigious vocal competition, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Each winner receives a $15,000 cash prize and the prestige and exposure that come with winning the competition that launched the careers of many of opera's biggest stars.
Following yesterday's highly competitive semi-final competition, nine young singers will advance to the final phase of the Metropolitan Opera's 2016 National Council Auditions, America's most prestigious vocal competition. The selected finalists, chosen by a panel of experts from the classical music industry, will compete on the Met stage on Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m. The winners will receive individual cash prizes of $15,000 and the prestigious-and potentially career-launching-title of National Council Auditions Winner. The Grand Finals Concert will feature Antony Walker conducting the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as each finalist performs two arias.
The Merola Opera Program and the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch present a free screening of Verdi's opera RIGOLETTO at the next Merola Goes to the Movies, on Sunday, March 20, 1:00 pm, in the Koret Auditorium of the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch (100 Larkin Street).
