'I didn't want to write a play about a playwright. That seemed to be the end of the rope: you write a play about someone who's trying to write a play.'

Seminar starts out strong, ripping into the fabric of the business of teaching fiction writing with knife-edged one-liners and characters you love to despise; then, as the plot, the characterizations, and the theme take a hairpin turn, it emerges that, no, the teaching is not a scam after all, the students' fiction has possibilities, and the characters are not what we thought them. All Rebeck's hilarious savagery dissipates. Like Rebeck's writing and show-running for the first season of TV's Smash, it is a little too affectionate toward the business and the people in it to stay as scathing as Rebeck could and should keep it.

In the world premiere production of playwright (and creator of NBC's Smash) Theresa Rebeck's ZEALOT---now performing at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through November 16---Mecca, Saudi Arabia serves as the setting for a volatile tug-of-war that erupts at the start of the 'Hajj,' the holy city's annual Islamic pilgrimage. Here a young woman's act of civil disobedience incites riots, prompting a carefully-considered, if endlessly circling debate on the merits of whether to comply and honor a host country's 'traditional' rules, or to allow Western ideologies to triumph in order to best serve the needs of a fellow human---a fellow global citizen---in dire need of care and protection. While Rebeck's play, helmed by SCR's own artistic director Marc Masterson, is generally insightful, the play feels pretty unfinished, as if there's plenty more to unearth in the narrative that didn't quite make it to the page (and, consequently, the stage). Regrettably, it doesn't quite reach the point of heightened urgency you would come to expect in a drama with such a politically-charged storyline.

Smartly directed by Ron May, Seminar is one tightly knit, fast-paced, engaging, and provocative comedy of mixed manners and artistic insights. A solid ensemble delivers Rebeck's rapid fire dialogue with bristling conviction and energy. It is a well-crafted production that will have you reflecting on its themes long after you've left the theatre and likely wanting to see it one more time.

Haven Theatre Company opens their 2014 - 2015 Season with the Chicago premiere of Catherine Trieschmann's Hot Georgia Sunday, directed by Marti Lyons, at The Den Theatre, 1333 N.
