Anita Darian, a soprano whose four-octave voice earned her the nickname “The Armenian Yma Sumac” and spawned an eclectic 50-year career that ranged from performances with the New York City Opera, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic to big-band jazz concerts, co-starring roles with Barbara Cook, and hit pop recordings that included “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is dead at 87. A longtime resident of East Atlantic Beach, L.I., she died Sunday, Feb. 1 at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside of complications from surgery.

Variations Theatre Group's critically acclaimed production of Eric Bogosian's TALK RADIO will conclude its limited engagement tomorrow night (Saturday) at the Chain Theatre. Inspired by the 1984 murder of controversial shock jock Alan Berg, TALK RADIO is set in a Cleveland radio station over the course of Barry Champlain's two-hour broadcast as he's being scrutinized that night by producers fixated on taking the show national, and fueled as always by coffee, cocaine and Jack Daniel's. Barry's jousts with his unseen callers-ranging from a white supremacist to a woman obsessed with her garbage disposal-are interspersed with confrontations by his ex-deejay pal and his sometime girlfriend/producer.

Sean Patrick Doyle, currently appearing as an Angel in the Tony-winning hit musical Kinky Boots, provides the vocals for the title song in The Boxtrolls, a full length stop-motion from Laika and Focus Features, who brought audiences the Oscar-nominated Coraline and ParaNorman. In the song written by Monty Python's Eric Idle with Oscar-winning Atonement composer Dario Marianelli, Doyle voice-matches Academy Award-winner Ben Kingsley as the evil Archibald Snatcher's alter ego, M. Frou Frou. The animated feature topped the UK/Ireland box office when it began it's foreign release across eight markets, and arrives in theaters nationwide on September 26th. The soundtrack, featuring Doyle, is currently available for download on iTunes.

Barbara Rosenblat, who plays the cancer-stricken inmate Miss Rosa on "Orange is the New Black," recently checked out the new revival of Eric Bogosian's TALK RADIO at the Chain Theatre. Barbara appeared in the 2007 Broadway production of TALK RADIO starring Live Schreiber, and she was also in the original cast of The Secret Garden as the housekeeper Mrs. Medlock.
