BWW Review: HAIRSPRAY at Desert Theatreworks is an Explosion of Delightful Energy

If you hear an explosion of energy coming from the east end of the valley over the next couple of weekends, it is almost certainly the production of Hairspray at Indio's Desert Theatreworks. I enjoyed virtually every detail of the production so much that it's hard to know where to start. The performers, the sets, the singing, the dancing, and above all, the exuberance grab us from our chilly winter evenings and whisk us away to a truly happy place!

NCTC Presents Heartfelt Comedy, STEVE

In March, New Conservatory Theatre Center presents Steve, written by Mark Gerrard and directed by local favorite, Becca Wolff. Named one of Ben Brantley's Top Ten in 2015 in The New York Times, this uproariously funny comedy is "the ultimate theatre-geek's tragicomedy" (Newsday). What happens when you get bored with "happily ever after"? Steve got his happy ending, but years later, his Prince Charming is sexting another man, his best friend is ill, and he's hitting the expiration date on his desirability. Chock full of acidic wit, musical theatre references, and plenty of heart, Steve is a hilarious and relatable comedy about growing up, without growing old.

Jazz Age Comes Alive In BULLETS OVER BROADWAY At Foothill Music Theatre

Multi-award winning Foothill Music Theatre presents Bullets Over Broadway The Musical, the Tony Award-nominated musical based on Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath's screenplay for the hit film Bullets over Broadway. A love letter to the golden age of Broadway, Bullets Over Broadway The Musical brings the classic musical comedy back with a bang. Loaded with the songs that made the 1920s roar, this splashy musical features Jazz Age standards including 'Let's Misbehave,' ''Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do,' "Tiger Rag," and 'Up a Lazy River.' In this madcap comedy, a young playwright finally gets his play produced on Broadway, but discovers there's a catch: the mobster putting up the funds wants a vehicle for his ditzy, talent-free girlfriend. Throw in an aging diva, dancing gangsters, and a bevy of beautiful chorus girls, and comedic capers ensue. Under the direction of Milissa Carey and music direction of Louis Lagalante, Bullets Over Broadway The Musical will play February 28- March 17, 2019 (press opening: March 1) with performances 7:30pm Thursdays, 8:00pm Todays & Saturdays, and 2pm Sundays at the Lohman Theatre, 12345 El Monte Rd (I-280 & El Monte Road), Los Altos Hills.
