Casting is set for Studio Theatre's production of Pipeline, playwright Dominique Morisseau's searing drama about the school-to-prison pipeline and a mother desperately trying to keep her son from becoming ensnared in it. The production runs January 15-February 16, 2020 and is directed by Awoye Timpo. Starring are DC theatre favorite Justin Weaks (Studio's Curve of Departure) as high school student Omari and Andrea Harris Smith making her Studio debut as his mother, public school teacher Nya. The breakfast event, held at Bank of America Tower in Manhattan unveiled the next phase of Theatre Forward's community access grant program, made possible by Bank of America. With this substantial, multi-year partnership with exclusive corporate sponsor Bank of America, Theatre Forward will continue to support theatre programs that accelerate change in the areas of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and expand the audiences and communities engaged with theatre throughout the country. The first round of grants will be awarded in 2020, and the second round awarded in 2021, with each grant of $50,000 or more.

At local high schools, young performers will take the stage to pull back the curtain on what life is like for young trans people here in San Diego. Created in collaboration with local LGBTQ+ youth, Danny's Story is a forum theatre play that will allow high schoolers in the audience to explore their own reactions to experiencing or observing transphobia. The predominately queer cast members, who make the choice to out themselves as part of the performance, will invite students to step into character roles and interact with the professional performers in order to consider different ways to address bigotry and bias in our community.
