The National Philharmonic 2019-2020 concert season takes a walk down memory lane with a?oeARRIVAL from Sweden: The Music of ABBAa?? on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore. The number one ABBA tribute band in the world, ARRIVAL from Sweden will join Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski and the National Philharmonic for this electrifying blast from the past, as concertgoers relive the music from the movie Mamma Mia. ARRIVAL will perform some of ABBA's greatest hits, including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Take a Chance, Waterloo, Fernando, and more. The original ABBA is one of the most successful pop acts of all time, and is the second-best selling band behind only the Beatles. In fact, Universal Music certified in 2010 that ABBA has sold more than 375 million records and still sells about 5 million each year. ARRIVAL from Sweden was founded by Vicky Zetterberg in 1995 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and very soon became one of the world's most popular and best-selling ABBA tribute bands. Since 1995, ARRIVAL has toured in 60 countries, and their show, a?oeThe Music of ABBAa?? has sold out arenas and venues all over the world. Audience members are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite ABBA costumes. The Philharmonic's Color the Music Exhibit will showcase artwork created by young people and displayed in the Strathmore lobby throughout the concert weekend. Now, however, thanks to the support of its fans, the National Philharmonic is set to debut in September with the first concert of a full season of 11 performances.

The National Philharmonic announced today that thanks to the incredible generosity from the residents of Montgomery County and Washington Area, the Philharmonic, which performs at The Music Center at Strathmore, has raised sufficient funds to stabilize its finances, and plans not only to present its complete 2019-2020 season as announced, but also to continue its programs for years to come. The 2019-2020 Season Subscriptions are on sale now! The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is announcing several changes to the 2019/2020 Regional Arts MUSIC 'At Eight' and MUSIC 'At Two' Classical Concert Series, featuring an incredible roster of world-class orchestras and performing artists, including six internationally acclaimed piano soloists in one season: Emanuel Ax, Khatia Buniatishvili, David Fray, Olga Kern, Polina Osetinskaya, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. The Morris Choral Society is pleased to announce that soprano Christina Major will perform as featured soloist in its upcoming Spring Concert "Greatest Hits from Opera and Broadway" in two performances Saturday May 18 at 8:00pm and Sunday May 19 at 3:00pm at the historic United Methodist Church on the Green in Morristown, New Jersey. MCS Music Director Jason Tramm will lead the distinguished Morris Choral Society and guest soloist Christina Major in a concert of unforgettable music written by the greatest composers of Opera and Broadway.  Due to a conflict, Christina Major will replace Susanne Burgess in the program.

One of Leonard Bernstein's most iconic compositions will be paired with the legendary Ludwig van Beethoven's most celebrated work in "Bernstein and Beethoven: Part I" on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore. As a continued celebration of the Leonard Bernstein Centennial, world-renowned pianist Michael Brown will join Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski and the National Philharmonic in performing Bernstein's Symphony No. 2 ("The Age of Anxiety"), a genre-defying work that combines elements of symphony, concerto, and program music and is inspired by the dramatic poem The Age of Anxiety by W.H. Auden. After an intermission, Gajewski will lead the Philharmonic in Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67. This timeless work is one of the most performed, recorded, adapted, and abused of all the works in Beethoven's canonical repertoire. A pre-concert lecture will take place between 6:45-7:15 p.m. From 7-7:30 p.m., families can explore orchestral instruments with Philharmonic musicians. Following solo and concerto performances at Queens College's Karol Rathaus Festival last month, Polish-Canadian pianist Daniel Wnukowski (vnoo-koff'-skee) further champions the music of this long-neglected Galician-Jewish composer with the launch of a recording cycle of Karol Rathaus's complete works for solo piano. The project, spanning four volumes on Toccata Classics, is an extension of Mr. Wnukowski's advocacy for music suppressed by the Nazi regime, and all of the works on Volume 1 appear on recording for the first time.

Three-time Grammy award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey and Grammy award-nominated violist Roberto Diaz will join Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski in performing Robert Schumann's Manfred Overture; Miklos Rozsa's Theme, Variations and Finale, Op. 13; Richard Strauss' Don Quixote; and Richard Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger. Almost 50 years later, in what was to be one of his last interviews, Bernstein recalled the event: "I strode out and I don't remember a thing from that moment-I don't even remember intermission-until the sound of people standing and cheering and clapping." Internationally renowned soloist Bailey is considered one of the premiere cellists in the world, and Classical Net describes him as "One of the finest cellists alive today." A longtime advocate for music suppressed by the Nazi regime, Polish-Canadian pianist Daniel Wnukowski (vnoo-koff'-skee) makes his New York debut this February as part of a festival dedicated to the music of Galician-Jewish composer Karol Rathaus (1895-1954). Little-known today, Rathaus was a protege of Franz Schreker and built a successful career in Berlin before fleeing in 1932 due to the deteriorating political situation in Germany. He first migrated to Paris, then to London in 1934. He settled in New York in 1938 and joined the music faculty of Queens College two years later as its first professor of composition.

Multi Grammy Award-nominee violinist Philippe Quint celebrates his new album Chaplin's Smile, out Friday, January 11, 2019 on Warner Classics, with a international tour of concerts commemorating Charlie Chaplin's compositional talents as well as his encounters with the great composers of his day. Chaplin's Smile will be performed on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 9:30pm at Joe's Pub, hosted by Chaplin's granddaughter Kiera Chaplin.

The National Philharmonic rings in the new year-and continues its celebration of the great Leonard Bernstein's Centennial-with two of Bernstein's favorite composers in "Infamous Brahms" Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 at 3 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore's Concert Hall. International pianist Haochen Zhang, who won the gold medal for the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition at the age of 19, will join Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski in performing Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor. Both Zhang and Gajewski are former child prodigies. Zhang has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe, and Asia with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination, and spectacular virtuosity. During the weekend's concerts, the National Philharmonic will also celebrate Maestro Gajewski's 60th birthday. There will be a pre-concert lecture on Saturday, from 6:45-7:15 p.m., and Sunday, from 1:45-2:15 p.m. Ticket prices are $34-$88 and are free for young people age 7-17.
