The Library of Congress honored baritone Thomas Hampson with its Living Legend medal during a concert on Thursday, October 28, in the Library's Coolidge Auditorium. On September 29, Lado Ataneli sings the hunchback court jester and Christine Schäfer is his daughter Gilda, both adding new roles to their Met repertory. Conductor Paolo Arrivabeni makes his Met debut, as does Francesco Meli as the Duke of Mantua, Nino Surguladze as Maddalena, and Andrea Silvestrelli as Sparafucile. On October 5, George Gagnidze returns to the role of Rigoletto which he sang at the Met in 2009.

It is with much sadness that the leadership, staff and artists of Kansas City Repertory Theatre reflect upon the death of its former artistic director George Keathley, who died September 12, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at the age of 85.

In the spring of 1939, two musical adaptations of Gilbert and Sullivan's 1885 music theater masterpiece "The Mikado" opened on Broadway. One, which had originated in Chicago, was called "The Swing Mikado." The other, which producer Mike Todd created when he was prevented from producing "The Swing Mikado" himself, was called "The Hot Mikado."
