The John W. Engeman Theater at Northport is proud to present Sleeping Beauty, part of the TD BANK Youth Theater Series.

'The Cave', a three-act play by the writer, illustrator, artist and playwright, Mervyn Peake, which was discovered only after his death in 1968, is to receive its world premiere at the Blue Elephant Theatre.

This brilliant musical by the great contemporary composer Stephen Sondheim re-tells the fairy tale stories of the Brothers Grimm - a princess who must run at midnight and loses her shoe, the childless couple that must lift a curse by an evil witch, a boy and his beanstalk, and that little girl in the red cloak on her way to grandmother's house - in a musical that explores both the whimsy of wishing and the darker side of the forest.

The Regent's Park Open Air Theatre has announced the complete cast for its production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's INTO THE WOODS. Helen Dallimore (Cinderella), Beverly Rudd (Little Red Riding Hood), Simon Thomas (Rapunzel's Prince), and Michael Xavier (Wolf and Cinderella's Prince) will be joining the previously announced cast members. These include Hannah Waddingham (The Witch), Jenna Russell (Baker's Wife), Marc Antolin (Swing), Valda Aviks (Granny), Billy Boyle (Mysterious Man), Gaye Brown (Cinderella's Stepmother), Sophie Caton (Swing), Alice Fearn (Rapunzel), Mark Goldthorp (Steward), Amy Griffiths (Lucinda), Mark Hadfield (Baker), Amy Ellen Richardson (Florinda), Ben Stott (Jack), and Gemma Wardle (Cinderella's Mother).

Acorn Productions, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing and developing the performing arts in Southern Maine, unveils plans for the 2010/11 theater season. In keeping with Acorn mission to encourage members of the Greater Portland community to experience live theater as both participants and audience members, the company continues to produce three signature events: Phyzgig, the Maine Playwrights Festival, and Naked Shakespeare. This season the company also adds two new series of performances in the Acorn Studio Theater in Westbrook: the Studio Series and Fairy Tale Players. All of Acorn's productions involve sharing with audiences the results of long-term collaborations that focus on the creative growth of affiliated artists. These performances are presented in a variety of both traditional and non-traditional venues at affordable ticket prices that allow access for people of all economic means. During the upcoming 2010/11 season, Acorn produces events at spaces ranging from Portland Stage Company to Battery Steele on Peaks Island, showcasing the talents of over 100 talented local actors, directors, designers and playwrights.

Amazing characters include lovely leading ladies like Hairspray's cheerful Tracy Turnblad, the spunky Annie Oakley, sentimental Cinderella and the always entertaining Church Basement Ladies. PURE Theatre is proud to announce the world premiere of Rodney Lee Rogers & Spencer Deering's adaptation Ginger: a Hansel & Gretel Tale. Directed by PURE's Co-Founder Rodney Lee Rogers, and will feature Sullivan Graci Hamilton, Addiston Dent, Brian DeCosta, and introducing Carri Schwab. Ginger opens Thursday, August 5 and runs through the 20th.

Into the Woods takes the stories of the Brothers Grimm and gives them a dark and humorous twist. The popular tales of Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame), Cinderella and Rapunzel are interwoven with that of the Baker and his Wife and their quest to have a child. However this re-telling goes beyond ‘happily ever after' as the familiar characters find themselves in unfamiliar circumstances and hopes and dreams are questioned and revisited.

In celebration of Sondheim's eightieth birthday, the Open Air Theatre season closes with INTO THE WOODS, co-directed by Timothy Sheader and Liam Steel. Perfectly placed within the Open Air Theatre amphitheatre, the musical gives the stories of The Brothers Grimm a dark and humorous twist. The production officially opened and the reviews are in!
