Spears' comedy career began at the age of 14 when he started making stand-up appearances at clubs in his hometown of New York City. His big break came in 1987 with his appearance on Russell Simmons' “Def Comedy Jam” on HBO and “Showtime at the Apollo.”

The 31st Annual Bessie Awards will be held on Monday, October 19, at 7:30pm, at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York City. Doors open at 6:30pm for red carpet and pre-show celebrations.

The preview week is over, we've had press night; or rather press day - unusually for the West End, we did a matinee and an evening show on opening day and invited reviewers to see both performances, just to show that Showstopper really is different every show.
