Opera Philadelphia's Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD to Receive New York Premiere, 4/1/16

The Apollo Theater and Opera Philadelphia announced today that Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD will have its New York premiere in a co-production between the two institutions, April 1 and 3, 2016.  The engagement marks the first time opera will be performed on the Apollo Theater stage, and the first time Opera Philadelphia will play New York. 

Cinemark Announces Opening of New 14-Screen Theatre in Downey, CA

Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CNK), a leader in the motion picture exhibition industry, will open a new 14-screen theatre in Downey, California, on Friday, December 11, 2015. Cinemark Downey and XD will feature Cinemark's NextGen cinema design concept, Luxury Lounger recliners, favorite concession items, and Cinemark XD. The new Cinemark is an anchor at The Promenade at Downey, located at 8840 Apollo Way; this historic spot is the former home of Downey Studios and the Apollo Space Mission. The multiplex will offer guests large wall-to-wall screens, enhanced sound systems, and digital presentation in every auditorium. The new complex represents the 22nd theatre and 13th Cinemark XD: Extreme Digital Cinema auditorium located in Southern California.

New York based company Ballet Hispanico performed this November 20-21, 2015, at the historic Apollo Theatre, presenting the world premiere of "If walls could speak," by Brazilian native and acclaimed choreographer Fernando Melo. Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro proudly presented Melo in his New York debut through a collaborative effort to co-commission the work in conjunction with the Apollo Theater and support by Univision Communications Inc.

SOMEBODY TO LOVE Wins PFP's Screenplay Contest

Pride Films and Plays is delighted to announce the winner of our 2015 Great Gay Screenplay contest is Somebody to Love by Jay Cipriani. The victor was selected Sunday, November 15 at the conclusion of PFP?s Gay Film Week in the Hoover-Leppen Theatre of Center on Halsted. The weekend included enhanced staged readings of the top five scripts, including A Place in the Woods by Erik Gernand, Finndale by Lloyd Ohls, Drowning City by Chuck Griffith, and The Gay Shoe Clerks by Brad Cryan. The week also commenced on Monday, November 9 with Queer Bits Fall Film Festival II at the Public House Theatre. The festival included two programs comprised of 11 short films all having their Chicago premieres and included a talkback with Chicago filmmaker Dan Pal, whose short Another Party with Scotty was featured in the festival.
