For the seventh consecutive year, singers from around the world will gather online to compete in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition (aka the 'SASSY' Awards) -- a 21st century version of the amateur night at the Apollo Theater that helped launch the career of a gifted teenager from Newark, Sarah 'Sassy' Vaughan, more than 75 years ago.

On Monday, July 30, Shoshana Bean will perform her recently released album show - Spectrum - at the Harlem's World Famous Apollo Theater. Spectrum, Bean's fourth studio album was released on February 9, is a fresh new take on the classic tradition of big band with arrangements by Grammy award-nominated arranger Alan Ferber. This concert will feature Bean along with an 18 piece big band performing a carefully-selected collection of standards, classics and modern favorites, while still including a few Bean-penned gems. Bean made her Broadway debut in the original cast of Hairspray before taking over for Idina Menzel as Elphaba in Wicked and has performed all over the world with artists such as Ariana Grande, Brian McKnight, Postmodern Jukebox (PMJ), David Foster and Michael Jackson.
On Thursday, May 24 (7:30 pm) Japan Society presents an evening with two New York-based master instrumentalists: koto player Yumi Kurosawa and shamisen player Yoko Reikano Kimura, who are revitalizing their instruments through novel repertoire, musical approaches, and playing techniques. The eclectic program will span traditional, classical, and contemporary works, including duets of koto + shamisen, shamisen + cello (Hikaru Tamaki) and koto + tabla (Anubrata Chatterjee). Center Theatre Group's regional finalist Gerardo Navarro took first place in the August WilsonMonologue Competition (AWMC) National Finals held at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway last night, May 7, 2018. Representing Los Angeles and the Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts, Navarro performed a monologue from 'King Hedley II,' which earned him a $1,500 scholarship and a $3,000 cash prize.
Bringing together over 1,000 young choristers, the Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC) presents its 15th annual, year-end concert for the citywide YPC School Choruses program at The World Famous Apollo Theater (253 West 125th Street) on Thursday, May 17, at 10:45 a.m. The program is directed year-round by YPC Associate Artistic Director Elizabeth Nuñez, and the upcoming concert showcases the musical growth of its participants-New York City elementary- and middle-school children-over the course of the school year, during which YPC-trained music educators teach them how to read and write music, sing with healthy vocal technique, and perform as a group.
