Rural Roots Music Festival to Come to Fremont, Nebraska, 10/4-6
by Tyler Peterson - Sep 8, 2013

'It's an amazing world we live in today,' says Bob Everhart, President of the National Traditional Country Music Assn. 'It's thrilling to see some prehistoric creatures return to planet earth,' Everhart said in a recent radio interview, 'but more importantly to me is the struggle to keep our old-time rural music alive. Nebraska is one of the last states in America that makes an attempt at keeping their cultural heritage a part of the present. Early 'country' music was directly from the soil, from the real 'country' if you will. Country music we hear today is not really 'country' music, it's just a pale imitation of the real thing. Originally from 'rural' America, so-called country music today has fallen into the hands of whoever has the most money. Still, the roots from whence it came is very important, especially to Nebraskans. The 'rural' music of the Great Plains tells the tales of early life on the prairie, it tells stories of homesteading and pioneering. So, where are the stories about the groundbreaking activities of our ancestors? What happened to the songs of our early rural music makers?'

Please note that our Ken Price and Terry Smith exhibitions are only on view through Sunday, August 18, 2013. A selection of 65 works on paper tracks Price's dedication to drawing for more than 50 years and demonstrates a wide range of characters and techniques. Ken Price: Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Works on Paper 1962–2010 will travel to Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, from September 27, 2013–January 19, 2014 and the Harwood Museum of Art, Taos, New Mexico from February 22–May 4, 2014.

Mickey Gilley to be Inducted Into AMERICA'S OLD TIME COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME
by Nicole Rosky - Jul 1, 2013

1976 was a big year for the National Traditional Country Music Association,' says Bob Everhart, current president of the organization. 'That was the year of its founding, and it has been running continuously ever since. It conducts the upper Midwest's most successful festival of early American country, bluegrass, folk, mountain, hillbilly, and western music. There's lots of labels and genres to describe 'country' music, but we are pretty much in the time-frame before it became what it is today. Thirty-eight years is a long time to keep any kind of event going, and to see Mickey Gilley one of the best known country music piano players ever, to become one with America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame, is indeed a recognition of the importance of the roots of country music. Mickey Gilley's most prestigious year was that same year the NTCMA was founded, 1976, when the Academy of Country Music awarded him with Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Song of the Year, Top Male Vocalist of the Year, and Music City News proclaimed him the Most Promising Male Artist of the Year. 1976, bicentennial year celebration of the birth of America. Amazing isn't it, that in 2013, 38 years later, this same man, Mickey Gilley, will be inducted into this kind of Hall of Fame, that emanates from rural America.'

Nathan Stanley to Receive Best Classic Country CD of the Year at National Old-Time Country & Bluegrass Festival, 8/29
by BWW News Desk - Aug 29, 2011

Anyone connected to, or familiar with, 'country' music has probably heard the name Stanley. Probably lots of folks have been exposed to the Stanley name, especially the Stanley Brothers, preservationists of mountain music, or as they liked to call it, 'old timey country.' The brothers are being inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame this year. Ralph Stanley, the surviving Stanley Brother, was a huge hit in the movie 'O Brother Where Art Thou.' His brother Carter, the smooth vocalist and songwriter for the duo, passed away in 1966 from cirrhosis of the liver. He was only 41 years old. Ralph has carried on the musical tradition of the Stanley Brothers, mostly with his band the Clinch Mountain Boys. This 'tradition' is vitally important to fans of country music, when it was actually 'country.' Today, most country music leans heavily on rock-and-roll, and even rap, in an attempt to attract a young audience. But in the doing, perhaps major labels have tossed the baby out with the bath water, when it comes to actually projecting a true 'country' image in the music they produce.'
