Bailiwick Chicago's Executive Director, Kevin Mayes, announced today that the company is producing a development workshop and subsequent concert performances of a new musical comedy, titled BLOOM, with music by Peter Foley, lyrics by Matthew Heimer, book by Andy Siegel, and story by Kevin Mayes.
Two Brooklyn opera companies, AMERICAN OPERA PROJECTS (AOP) and OPERA ON TAP, will present the fourth installment of its Opera Grows in Brooklyn series, an evening of three 30-minute opera scenes and songs. The program will feature mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer singing Absynth, a futuristic monodrama made up of newly-commissioned electronic songs from composers Nico Muhly, Andrew Staniland, and others; Clint Borzoni's new one-act opera Margot Alone in the Light, based on a Ray Bradbury short story; and Dreams of Pure Spirit: Songs of Tom Cipullo with the composer at the piano. The show will be held on Friday, April 16 at 8pm at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood.
The CalArts School of Theater premiers Kenwood Wilderness, an opera-play by Peter Parshall Jensen with original music composed by Lam Kwan-Fai and directed by Lars Jan. Kenwood Wilderness will perform in Ensemble Theater II (E400) at the California Institute of the Arts, 24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia, CA 91355. On Monday, April 5 at Gotham Hall, Symphony Space's annual Gala will inaugurate the first annual Access to the Arts Awards, a tribute to the artists, corporations, philanthropists, and others who share its dedication to providing quality arts experiences to the greatest number of people. Awardees will be legendary soprano Jessye Norman, who gives generously of her time and talents to young artists and is a recent recipient of the National Medal of Arts; JPMorgan Chase Foundation, a leader in arts and education funding, and a longtime supporter of Symphony Space's Curriculum Arts Project; and The 52nd Street Project, which offers unique arts and theatre opportunities to at-risk youth.
In a year-long celebration of Broadway tradition, Camp Broadway will kick off its 15th season with performances by luminaries of the New York stage and launch its 2010 program initiatives.
