BWW Interview: Chair of Wayne State University's Department of Theatre and Dance John Wolf

John Wolf chairs the prestigious Theatre and Dance department at Detroit's Wayne State University, creating well-rounded and meticulously educated students turned theatre professionals. Wolf took a moment to speak with us at BroadwayWorld about the program he oversees and how he encourages the future generations of arts professionals.

Chamber Orchestra To Present Pioneering Female Composer, Performer, And Improviser Martha Mooke

The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia (COP) continues our Improvisionaries season presenting trailblazing composer and electric violist, Martha Mooke.  COP's fifth series program at the Kimmel Center, Mozart, Mooke, and Faure, will feature Mozart's brilliant Symphony No. 38 "Prague." This iconic work received its first performance in Prague during one of Mozart's most successful tours to the city. The "Prague" symphony will share the program with a new commission by Martha Mooke. Mooke's unique style crosses the classical, jazz, and rock genres with a compelling and singular musical voice. In addition to concert appearances worldwide, Mooke's work has been featured in recordings that often defy categorization, including David Bowie's Heathen CD.

Cutting Edge Concerts Presents The World Premiere of Eric Salzman's Opera BIG JIM & THE SMALL TIME INVESTORS

On Monday, April 9 at 7:30 pm at Symphony Space, Victoria Bond's Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival, Gramercy Opera, and Quog Music Theater, Inc. present the world premiere staged production of the late Eric Salzman's Big Jim & the Small-time Investors. It's the first event of Cutting Edge Concerts 21st season, which continues with performances by Sybarite5 with shakuhachi player James Nyoraku Schlefer (April 16), Hub New Music (April 23), and Cygnus Ensemble (April 30). The NYC Tap Dance Festival Announces Lineup For its 18th Year

The American Tap Dance Foundation's TAP CITY, THE NEW YORK CITY TAP FESTIVAL will return for its 18th year from Saturday, July 7 through Friday, July 13 with local and international tap dance artists, master classes, a tap dance boat tour around Manhattan,Tap Dance Awards, Rhythm in Motion Concert Performance and “Tap it Out,” a free outdoor tap dance event in the middle of Times Square. *Lineup below.

New York Opera Alliance Announces the Third Annual New York Opera Fest Performance Schedule

New York Opera Alliance (NYOA), a consortium of New York opera companies and producers, presents the third annual New York Opera Fest (nyoperafest.com), a two-month celebration of opera on an unprecedented scale that takes place throughout May and June, with over 20 New York City-based companies large and small, putting on over 30 events in venues around the city, including World Premiere performances of 12 new works.

8th Annual VALENTINA KOZLOVA INTERNATIONAL BALLET  COMPETITION Comes to Symphony Space This Month

The 8th annual Kozlova International Ballet Competition will take place March 26-30 at Symphony Space, NYC.   More than 100 dancers from around the world, from Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, USA, and Venezuela will gather in NYC to dance for scholarships to international schools, company contracts, and other awards before a distinguished jury led by Andris Liepa, former principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet and guest with ABT, NYCB, and other international companies.

Parallel Exit Returns With THE FINAL REEL, A Live-Action Silent Film

New York City's Drama Desk-nominated Parallel Exit returns to the Voorhees Theatre as part of the New York City College of Technology's Theatreworks Program, to present the world premiere of THE FINAL REEL, from March 22-24, 2018 at 8:00pm each night, with an additional 2:00pm matinee on March 24, at the Voorhees Theatre, 186 Jay Street, Brooklyn. Actor James Colby Passes Away at Age 56

BroadwayWorld is sad to report that actor James Colby passed away on February 23rd. He was 56. Colby was most recently seen on Broadway in Lynn Nottage's SWEAT.

2018 MAC Award Nominees Announced

The Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC) is pleased to announce the 2018 MAC Award nominees. The nominees, in a majority of the categories, were determined by votes cast by the active MAC membership. The MAC Board of Directors selected the nominees for Show of the Year. Special committees selected the nominees in the Ensemble Instrumentalist, Piano Bar Instrumentalist, Piano Bar Singing Entertainer (Female; Male), Recording (LaMott Friedman), Major Recording, Song and Comedy/Novelty Song categories. The names of the songwriters in the Song and Comedy/Novelty Song categories are being withheld during the voting period, but will be announced publicly as soon as the voting period concludes.

Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra and Jody Oberfelder Projects Present Kurt Weill's ZAUBERNACHT (Magic Night)

On March 14, 15 and 18, 2018, the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra (KCO) and Jody Oberfelder Projects (JOP) present Kurt Weill's Zaubernacht (Magic Night), a dance and chamber music work that will appeal to children and adults alike. For this production, choreographer Jody Oberfelder will create compelling characters based on the dynamic score, and the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra will perform composer Kurt Weill's long-lost orchestrations-the first time the original orchestrations will be heard in New York City since Zaubernacht's American premiere in 1925. A KCO chamber music ensemble will be joined by singer Hai-Ting Chinn, and the intrepid and whimsical veteran JOP members Emily Giovine, Pierre Guilbault, Mary Madsen, Lindsey Mandolini, Ned Malouf (on stilts!), Maya Orchin, Hannah Wendel, Mei Yamanaka, and introducing 11-year-old Lyla Forest Butler! Lighting is by Savannah Bell, video design by Eric Siegel and costumes by Summer Lee Jack.

Emerging Choreographer Series Announced in Partnership with LaGuardia Performing Arts Center

Mare Nostrum Elements, founded and directed by Kevin Albert and Nicola Iervasi, presents, in collaboration with LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, the fifth annual Emerging Choreographer Series (ECS), showing works by nine young dancemakers.   The talented choreographers, selected from a group of 79 applicants this year, are indeed fortunate in the many benefits ECS offers.

Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater's 17th Anniversary Celebrates Black History Month With AN ANANSE TALE”

The Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation celebrated its 17th anniversary of its signature branch, the Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater (AYAADT), with an innovative, revitalized dance production at the Peter Norton Symphony Space on Saturday, February 3, 2018 in Manhattan, New York. The full-length performance was preceded by a private VIP reception and pre-show event by Egun Omode. Patrons cheered the non-stop energetic production of the ensemble's 90 minute performance rich with African culture.
