There's wiping a tear from your eye during an emotional performance, and then there's mopping up buckets of tears from your shirtsleeve for most of the show. For me, Fun Home was the latter.

I was book shopping a while back and stumbled across the graphic novel FUN HOME by Alison Bechdel. I sat down and read through it, appreciating Bechdel's artistic style, but also thoroughly engaged in the glimpses into her life that filled the pages. The musical version (music by Jeanine Tesori, with book and lyrics by Lisa Kron) definitely captures the essence of Bechdel's work, and that's really important when something is adapted for the stage. The current touring production of this show is playing at the Fox Theatre and I highly recommend this 2015 Tony Award winner.

FUN HOME is a great title for a musical. It conjures lightness, joy, whimsy … fun. There is some of that in the Tony Award-winning show, now enjoying its first national tour that includes a two-week stint at Chicago's Oriental Theatre. But for the most part, FUN HOME is dark.

The National Tour of Fun Home, the groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning Best Musical, opens its Chicago engagement at the Oriental Theatre (24 W. Randolph) tonight, Thursday, November 3, for a limited two-week run through November 13, 2016.

Based on the 2006 graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel, Fun Home tells the true story of Bechdel discovering her own sexuality, her relationship with her gay father, and her attempts to unlock the mysteries surrounding his life.

For two weeks only, the biggest musical of 2015 takes up residence in the Windy City. Fun Home, based on Alison Bechdel's acclaimed graphic novel, brings a woman's memories to life as she looks back on her relationship with her father. As BroadwayWorld reported last night, the first National Tour of FUN HOME will star Robert Petkoff (Broadway's Ragtime, All The Way, Anything Goes) as Bruce, Susan Moniz (Broadway's Grease, Chicago's Marriott Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater) as Helen and Kate Shindle (Broadway's Legally Blonde, Cabaret, and Miss America 1998) as Alison. Joining them will be ABBY CORRIGAN as Medium Alison, Alessandra Baldacchino (Broadway's Fun Home) as Small Alison, Karen Eilbacher as Joan, Robert Hager as Roy, LENNON NATE HAMMOND as John, PIERSON SALAVDOR as Christian, Anthony Fortino, Amanda Naughton, SOFIA TRIMARCHI and Michael Winther. At certain performances, CARLY GOLD will play the role of Small Alison.
