Although this year marks the 50th anniversary of Edith Piaf's passing, no French singer since has matched her level of international success. The singer and actress Patricia Kaas, whose first major breakthrough took place 26 years ago-and who has since sold 19 million albums worldwide and won six Victoires de la Musique (the French equivalent of GRAMMYs), 2 World Music Awards and over other 25 distinctions and awards-may be the female artist to have come closest. As a unique and charismatic interpreter of songs and live performer, too, Kaas has proven a worthy bearer of the Piaf torch. Kaas pays direct, emotional tribute to the legendary singer with the multimedia concert Kaas Chante Piaf, which comes to North America this September on a 45-country, 150-show tour of prestigious opera houses, concert halls and theaters, including a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall last November. The North American shows immediately precede three nights at Paris' Olympia.

PBS will close the 27th season of its critically-acclaimed American Masters series with a look at the life of one of stage and film's most prolific composers when Marvin Hamlisch: The Way He Was (working title) premieres on December 27, 2013. He was one of only two PEGOT winners ever, receiving a Pulitzer, four Emmys, four Grammys, three Oscars, and one Tony Award over the course of his distinguished musical career.
Promoting THE WAY HE WAS, Hamlisch's widow Balir Hamlisch revealed during the TCA press tour that her late husband 'had a very large music library... there's a lot, some unpublished,' said Blair Hamlisch. 'It's floor-to-ceiling, and I've been told it's one of the largest of a modern day composer.'
Following a recent trend of A-list movie actors enjoying successful runs on the Broadway stage, it appears that matinee idol Tom Cruise and funnyman Jim Carrey are now on the hunt for their own shot at the Tony.
PBS has officially announced the broadcast premiere of the new documentary all about EGOT - Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards - recipient Marvin Hamlisch with the newly announced American Masters 2013 final entry MARVIN HAMLISCH: THE WAY HE WAS.
With exclusive access to Hamlisch's personal archival treasure trove and complete cooperation from his family, Marvin Hamlisch: The Way He Was (w.t.), premiering nationally Friday, December 27 at 9 p.m. on PBS
