ZACH Theatre, known as the city's "leading professional theatre" (New York Times) and "liveliest and most polished professional theatre" (Austin American-Statesman) opens its new state-of-the-art Topfer Theatre this month, joining the realm of the nation's most widely recognized regional theatres.
To kick off their 2012-2013 season, A.D. Players is presenting Steven Dietz's Edgar award winning play SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE FINAL ADVENTURE. The play itself is an adaptation of American actor William Gillette's 1899 play, which borrows Irene Adler from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Scandal in Bohemia" and Professor James Moriarty from "The Adventure of the Final Problem." Irene Adler is an opera singer and a superficial villainess in her own right, tempting Sherlock Holmes' typically nonexistent romantic feelings. Professor James Moriarty is the malevolent architect of most of England's iniquitous scum, which earns him Sherlock's admiration for being a completely reserved and ultimately clever man.
The play, which won the 2007 Edgar Alan Poe Award for Best Mystery Play, will be the Houston professional premiere. Written by one of the most produced playwrights of our time, Steven Dietz, who is currently in residence at the University of Texas Austin, the play had its World Premiere at Arizona Theatre Company in a co-production with Pasadena Playhouse in 2006, and has since played throughout the country.
Steven Dietz's Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure has been performed all over the country, but when Nashville Children's Theatre presents it as the opening production of its 81st season, it will be the first time the play has been presented by a theatre for young audiences. And in another noteworthy first, the production marks the first time that Nashville Children's Theatre has mounted a show of some two hours in length.
Connecticut Repertory Theatre (CRT) will present the regional premiere of Theresa Rebeck's new play O Beautiful, October 4 - 14 in the Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre, Storrs. For tickets and information, call 860-486-2113 and visit www.crt.uconn.edu.

This production of the play, which won the 2007 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Mystery Play, will be its Houston professional premiere.
The NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK (NNPN),the country's alliance of non-profit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, has selected Sacramento's CAPITAL STAGE for associate membership. This action makes the seven-year old professional theatre company the first in the Capitol region to become affiliated with the highly regarding NNPN.
