It's tough to think of a production in the Austin area that's been as hyped as Ballet Austin's current production of The Nutcracker. Now in its 51st year, this year's show features new sets and costumes, the first time in over a decade that Ballet Austin's Nutcracker has received such a makeover. Though the designs cost a pretty penny, I'm not sure they enhance the show as much as they could. Nevertheless, the incredible performers and outstanding choreography aren't hampered by them, either.
Whether a first-timer or seasoned fan, you are in for a fabulous treat with the 51st annual production of The Nutcracker - Austin's premier holiday tradition. This season, Artistic Director Stephen Mills' acclaimed choreography and the beloved tale are enhanced by the World Premiere of spectacular new sets and costume designs.
Any theater-goer must have some passing familiarity with William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, arguably the screwball comedy in which fairies use a magical flower to make two sets of humans fall in love with each other. No such flower is needed here to elicit the audience's love and affection. Ballet Austin's production of Midsummer is a spectacular, charming, riotously funny, and an instant crowd-pleaser.
This winter marks a momentous occasion for Ballet Austin. This year's THE NUTCRACKER is the company's 50th annual production of the beloved ballet, and from my seat last night, I can say that this Golden Anniversary production is exactly that: golden. Helmed by choreographer Stephen Mills, this NUTCRACKER is full of life, beauty, and charm. Every moment is absolutely wonderful. It's doubtful that you'll find a production better than this.
