An elegant genesis for dance happened throughout the past February weekend, and particularly on one Friday night. Intricate candy-colored prints, drawings, collaged felt paintings and site-specific installations work together to tell the story of the Mounds-a group of bizarre mythical creatures that are the tragic protagonists of the artist's unfolding narrative between good and evil. Storytelling is a central part of Hancock's artistic practice. Each new work serves as a contribution to the saga of the Mounds, portraying the birth, life, death, afterlife, and even dream states of these half-animal, half-plant creatures, and their aggressors, the Vegans.

If there was ever a timeless holiday tradition, specifically in the world of performing arts, it is The Nutcracker ballet. In fact, one of my first memories of the theatre was seeing the Houston Ballet with my mother and grandmother at the age of 8 (and hadn't seen it since). Whether you go for the sparkling costumes, the familiar music, the festive atmosphere, or the lovable story- most patrons of this ballet favorite have a story to tell or a memory to share, and Ballet Austin did a spectacular job of keeping that memory alive.
