At the helm is director Michael Leeds (Tony nomination 'Swingin' on A Star'), who was a performer in the first National Tour with Bernadette Peters. Consequently, he has a special affinity for the show and was able to convince Jerry Herman to give him some leeway on new approaches and changes to for this production. 'I didn't get everything I wanted,' says Leeds with a laugh, ' but he was kind enough to give me a lot, including the ending that was eventually used on the tour, but not on Broadway.'

The Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs is beginning rehearsals of 'Mack and Mabel,' which opens their new season. Previews begin on August 20, with the opening on August 28. The musical is considered by Jerry Herman, who is also the author of 'La Cage Aux Folles,' 'Hello Dolly!,' and 'Mame,' to be his best score. The show was nominated for 8 Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 1974.
Director Ed Howard, best known for his play 'Greater Tuna' is at the Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs currently directing the world premiere of 'Full Circle,' a new musical about famed Broadway producer, Arthur Whitelaw. Mr. Howard is not only directing, he also co-wrote the book for the musical, along with Whitelaw.

ubbling Brown Sugar is a musical revue written by Loften Mitchell based on a concept by Rosetta LeNoire and featuring the music of numerous African-American artists who were popular during this period, including Duke Ellington, Eubie Blake, Count Basie, Cab Calloway and Fats Waller. It was nominated for the Tony Award as, 'Best Musical.' The revue is scheduled through Nov. 22 at Broward Stage Door Theatre, 8036 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs.
Stage Door producers Derelle Bunn and David Torres brought in Mark Goodman, a Broadway orchestrator who had worked on such shows as 'Zorro' with Anthony Quinn, 'Mame' with Juliet Prowse, and 'Woman of the Year' with Lauren Bacall to recreate the orchestrations and write out the books for the musical parts. Meanwhile, director Dan Kelley painstakingly transcribed lyrics from old recordings.
