"Mack and Mabel" to Open Stage Door's 2010-2011 Season
The Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs is beginning rehearsals of "Mack and Mabel," which opens their new season. Previews begin on August 20, with the opening on August 28. The musical is considered by Jerry Herman, who is also the author of "La Cage Aux Folles," "Hello Dolly!," and "Mame," to be his best score. The show was nominated for 8 Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 1974.
The Stage Door production will star local favorites Shane Tanner as Mack Sennett, and Ken Clement as Fatty Arbuckle. The casting of Mabel will be announced shortly. Directing the production will be Michael Leeds, Tony award nominee for "Swinging on A Star,, and the director of last year's surprise hit "A Little Night Music," also produced by the Stage Door.
The plot of "Mack and Mabel" involves the tumultuous romantic relationship between Hollywood director Mack Sennett, and Mabel Normand, one of his biggest stars. Based on a true story, the musical is full of Jerry Herman hits Including "Big Time," "Time Heals Everything," "Tap Your Troubles Away" and "I Won't Send Roses." It was Bernadette Peter's first starring role on Broadway, and made her a star.
"It has been my favorite show for years," says Executive Producer, Dee Wilson-Bunn. "We have an audience that loves this kind of large scale musical. I am so excited to get to do it, after loving it for so long".
Show times are Wed, Thurs, Sat, and Sun at 2:00, Thurs, Fri, Sat at 8:00, and Sunday at 7:00. For Tickets and Information call 954-344-7765. Stage Door Theatre , 8036 W Sample Rd, Coral Springs, FL 33065. www.stagedoortheatre.com
