Even as its shows reach New York and London, Berkeley Repertory Theatre begins another season of fearless theatre here at home: Emmy- and Tony Award-winning actor Mandy Patinkin stars in the world-premiere production of Compulsion on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage. Acclaimed director Oskar Eustis returns to the Bay Area with Rinne Groff's latest play, a kaleidoscopic collision of history and culture that combines stellar acting with marvelous marionettes. Compulsion, a world-premiere co-production from Berkeley Rep, The Public Theater, and Yale Repertory Theatre, begins previews on September 13, opens September 16, and closes October 31.

The fall season finally kicked off this past week with a pair of period ensemble pieces from Britain, both imported by New York's two big nonprofit companies, and both receiving solid B+ grades from StageGrade: Brief Encounter at the Roundabout's Studio 54 and The Pitmen Painters at the Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Neither got quite the smash-hit reviews that might have been expected--the Kneehigh's extravagant adaptation of Brief Encounter got raves (and a StageGrade A) when it ran last year at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, but there were a few more dissenting voices on its Broadway transfer. And Lee Hall's miners-as-artists drama, The Pitmen Painters, was not as unanimously adored as its London notices might have promised.

The fifth anniversary of the Brooklyn Book Festival will take place on Sunday, September 12, with an all-star literary lineup, including Salman Rushdie, Mary Gaitskill, Colson Whitehead, Paul Auster, Rosanne Cash, Paul Krugman, Gary Shteyngart, Francine Prose, Dennis Lehane, Jonathan Lethem, Pete Hamill, Jennifer Egan, Russell Banks, Michael Connelly, John Hodgman, Kristen Schaal, Thurston Moore, Sam Lipsyte, Sloane Crosley, Sandra Rodriguez and Paul Harding and many, many more, as well as Children's and Young Adult Lit stars like Rebecca Stead, Sara Shepard, Jacqueline Woodson, and Jon Scieszka. The Festival is a free, literary celebration featuring more than 200 national and international authors in readings and panel discussions. Always diverse, thought-provoking and lively, this premier literary event welcomes more than 30,000 attendees from around the world. On Sunday, September 12, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Brooklyn Literary Council and Brooklyn Tourism will host the fifth annual Brooklyn Book Festival. Each year, the Brooklyn Book Festival 'BoBi' award is given to an author who has made a broad impact on the field of literature. This year's recipient is John Ashbery, who will be honored at the Brooklyn Book Festival Gala Mingle on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The award was established in the Festival's second year. Previous BoBi recipients are Edwidge Danticat (2009), Walter Mosley (2008) and Paul Auster (2007). Ashbery will also participate in this year's Festival program, in an on-stage conversation with Paul Auster, Sunday, September 12.

The Brooklyn Book Festival will be held Friday, September 10th to Sunday, September 12th. The Brooklyn Book Festival showcases more than 200 national and international authors in readings and panel discussions as well as 175 booksellers, publishers, presses and organizations in an outdoor literary marketplace. Also, poet John Ashbery will accept the 'BoBi' award on Saturday at the Festival Gala.
