The two-time Tony Award-winning hilarious hit comedy 39 STEPS welcomed its first celebrity guest assassin this past weekend when technology journalist and television personality David Pogue joined the cast briefly for his theatrical debut at the historic Union Square Theatre on Saturday, September 26. Original Broadway and off-Broadway cast member Arnie Burton just departed the two-time Tony Award winning hilarious hit comedy 39 STEPS following his 1,000th performance as Man #2/Clown #2 last night, September 28th. Having originated the role in the original Broadway production, Burton returned for the current engagement at the Union Square Theatre. Cameron Pow (The Lion King) will join the cast on Wednesday, September 30th, taking over for Burton.

THE 39 STEPS is a parody of the works of Alfred Hitchcock. It is adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. The original concept of a four actor version was by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon. Patrick Barlow rewrote their adaptation in 2005. The play's concept calls for the entirety of Hitchcock's 1935 film to be performed with a cast of only four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress (or sometimes actor) plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors play every other character in the show: men, women, children, animals and even the occasional inanimate object. This approach to the film's serious spy story plays entirely for laughs. The script is chock full of allusions to (or puns on the titles of) the canon of Hitchcock films, including The Birds, Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest. In a way, THE 39 STEPS is like the love child of Mel Brooks' High Anxiety and Monty Python. The production now playing in Wimberley is a great piece of theatrical fun.

The fun never stops at 39 STEPS! Not only is it the show that Broadway comes to on their night off, but last night Randy Jones, the Village People's Cowboy, took in the two-time Tony Award winning hit comedy at the Union Square Theatre and met with the cast afterwards. Yesterday was Alfred Hitchcock's 116th birthday. The company of 39 Steps celebrated the Master of Suspense's birthday by launching a daily in-person lottery at the Union Square Theatre and by bringing out a specially designed cake by Cake Alchemy during the curtain call. Producer Douglas Denoff made an announcement that the audience join the cast in the Union Square Theatre lobby to enjoy a piece of this delicious cake. Check out photos below!
