BWW Reviews: The Rep's Must-See Production of CLYBOURNE PARK

Playwright Bruce Norris has written a real gem with his work CLYBOURNE PARK. This is a wonderfully clever and often hilarious work that looks at racism from two different angles, each represented in acts that take place in the past and in the present, respectively. The current production by the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is simply perfect, with expert direction and a fabulous cast. This is absolutely must-see theatre, and one, I dare say, that may have you coming back for repeat business.

BWW Reviews: The Rep's Colorful and Uproarious THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Anyone who reads my reviews regularly knows that I'm a fan of Shakespearean re-imaginings. Sure, I like my Shakespeare played straight as well, but sometimes when one of his plays is tinkered with in just the right fashion it comes to life in new and unexpectedly exciting ways. Such is the case with the Rep's slapstick take on THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, which is given the background of New Orleans during Mardi Gras, and given a heavy dose of 1930's period music to liven things up considerably. It's a brilliant take and leaves the Rep with a perfect batting average for the season. It's the reason why we go to Rep in the first place; they consistently provide entertaining shows that are expertly acted and directed, in a theatre that puts you right on top of the action. What more could you ask for?

BWW Reviews: HotCity Theatre's Disturbing Production of THE WINNERS

The basic premise of THE WINNERS, a winner itself of the HotCity Theatre Greenhouse play competition, is really just a twist by playwright David L.Williams on the old idea about money buying (or not buying) happiness. However, there's something genuinely discomforting going on here that disturbs me, and not just as a theatre patron, but as a parent. I don't want to give away too much, because spoilers are always unwelcome in reviews, suffice to say that my enjoyment was hindered by some problematic elements that are key to the work. But I'd be a hypocrite if I said I didn't like it because the characters are unlikable or the story bothersome, because there are plenty of successful (and justly famous) plays that have the same kind of issues. Like a horror movie that makes you squirm in your seat uncomfortably, THE WINNERS is disquieting stuff, but that doesn't mean it isn't worthy of discussion, or viewing.

HotCity Theatre Opens Season with THE WINNERS, 9/9-9/24

HotCity Theatre, a professional theatre company with a focus on contemporary programming and new play development announces the opening of THE WINNERS by David L. Williams. THE WINNERS was the winning script for HotCity's 5th Annual GreenHouse New Play Festival in June 2010. It takes a serious look at responsibility and freedom and mayleave the audience questioning what problems money can truly solve in life.

BWW Review: The Black Rep's Moving Production of BLACK PEARL SINGS!

John and Alan Lomax were pioneering folklorists and ethnomusicologists who tracked down songs and performers to produce field recordings that provide a compelling picture of our cultural history in musical terms. Oft times, their recordings required them to travel to remote locations, or even prisons, to find heretofore undiscovered gems. BLACK PEARL SINGS!, by playwright Frank Higgins, is an intriguing and fictionalized take on their unique talent for ferreting out these songs, here casting an ambitious female in their role. The Black Rep's current production is an engaging glimpse into the processes individuals like the Lomax brothers utilized, and it features sharp direction and a terrific two person cast.

The Black Rep Presents BLACK PEARL SINGS! 4/20-5/15

Set in the 1930's, jailed in a Texas prison, Alberta 'Pearl' Johnson has little hope for release and even less for reconnecting with her missing daughter. That is until Susannah Mullally, a song collector on a mission to record pieces of African American culture, overhears Pearl singing while on a visit to the prison. Through her music, Pearl has the unexpected opportunity to earn her freedom and search for her daughter. BLACK PEARL SINGS! is a work that harnesses race relations and the rich oral history of the African American community to build a tale that is funny, touching and compelling.

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) presents Macbeth by William Shakespeare. BWW Reviews: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis Presents Powerful MACBETH

Since I've become a theatre critic I've had the opportunity to see several productions of William Shakespeare's MACBETH, and most have left me wanting in one way or another. But, just as Roman Polanski's gritty 1971 film adaptation is, for me at least, the best interpretation of the Bard's play that has been made into a movie, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis has produced a staging that is vastly superior to any I have encountered to this point. This dark, bloody, and brooding production of Macbeth provides an excellent evening of theatre, and features a talented cast and powerful design and direction.

Upstream Theater Presents COOKING WITH ELISA, Closes 1/23
