Diversionary Theatre Now Searching for Executive Artistic Director

In October, 2013 Diversionary Theatre announced that its Executive Director was stepping down. At that time the Board of Directors took control of day-to-day operations of the theatre, and implemented a full 2014 season under the direction of Interim Executive Director and Board Treasurer Todd Nelms. This provided the Board with an opportunity to re-examine the theater's financial business model and ultimately make the decision to restructure internal staffing of the organization in order to help it evolve financially, and it is now launching a search for a new leader, with the title: 'Executive Artistic Director'.

Moonlight Stage to Open Summer Season with SPAMALOT, 6/11-28

Moonlight Stage Productions and Artistic Director Steven Glaudini launch the 34th summer season with the hilarious Broadway musical Monty Python's SPAMALOT, presented for the first time at Moonlight, with performances from June 11 to 28. Cygnet Theatre Closes Season with THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT, Now thru 6/22

Saving the most hilarious and provocative for last, Cygnet is closing their 11th season by bringing The Motherf**ker with the Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis (The Little Flower of East Orange) to San Diego for its premiere. The high-octane, verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery, is set smack in the center of New York's Hell's Kitchen. A Broadway hit that is exhilarating, hilarious and totally irreverent, this comedy/drama is also an examination of acceptance, loyalty and above all love. As is apparent from its title, this stunningly written play contains drugs, violence, sexual situations and strong f**king language. The production runs tonight, May 15th through June 22nd at the Old Town Theatre. Opening Night is May 24th.

Cygnet Theatre to Host AN EVENING WITH DUNCAN SHEIK, 3/24

Cygnet Theatre will be staging the powerful and bold coming-of-age musical Spring Awakening, and to add to the excitement, they will be bringing Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik to San Diego for a special one-night only event on March 24, 7:30 pm.

Cygnet Theatre to Stage SPRING AWAKENING

Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray will direct Spring Awakening, an eight-time Tony Award-winning musical with an electrifying rock score by Duncan Sheik. This intoxicating story of youth and sexuality is based on an 1895 play by Frank Wedekind and features a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The production, featuring choreography by award-winning dance maker Michael Mizerany, runs March 6 through April 27 at the Old Town Theatre. Opening Night is March 15th.

Cygnet Theatre has announced a Season 12 lineup that reveals common threads of identity, redemption and 'what really makes a family.' Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray and Executive Director Bill Schmidt have assembled a package of plays and musicals for the 2014-2015 season that will take theater-goers on a typical Cygnet-style journey from campy musicals and great American plays to works by up-and-coming young playwrights and audience favorites.

Cygnet Theatre kicks off 2014 by presenting the San Diego premiere of a new comedy that stirs up powerful questions about what people are willing to sacrifice for happiness. Cygnet has snagged the rights to present the Southern California premiere of Jordan Harrison's Maple and Vine, a sensation last season Off-Broadway at New York's Playwrights Horizons. Maple and Vine is a comedy about a couple who have become allergic to their 21st century lives and decide to move into a closed-community of 1950s re-enactors who forsake their cell phones and sushi for poodle-skirts, milkmen and Tupperware parties. Performances for Maple and Vine run today, January 16th through February 16th. Opening Night is January 25th.

Cygnet Theatre Receives $10K NEA Grant for SPRING AWAKENING and More

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced that Cygnet Theatre is one of 895 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The $10,000 grant will support forums, creative marketing and school workshops in conjunction with the electrifying and provocative musical, Spring Awakening.

Cygnet Theatre, in collaboration with Playwrights Project, is proud to present the second annual Playwrights in Process: New Play Festival. Cygnet Theatre has long been committed to celebrating human stories through the medium of live theatre. Playwrights in Process will present four readings of new plays by Rachael VanWormer, Ross Tedford Kendall, Robert John Ford and Todd Goodlett, each of whom is a Southern California playwright or a writer with strong regional connections. The four winners were selected from 54 submissions from across the country.

Cygnet to Present A CHRISTMAS CAROL Holiday Radio Play

Cygnet Theatre continues its annual holiday tradition of presenting a live radio play direct from the 'broadcast studios' of WCYG. For 7 years, theater-goers have enjoyed being part of the live studio audience watching 'Christmas Eve broadcasts' of holiday classics. Cygnet returns to the 1940's era studio to bring to life a unique presentation of the classic A CHRISTMAS CAROL complete with holiday music, commercials and the much-loved live sound effects.
