Cygnet Theatre to Present A CHRISTMAS CAROL, 11/28-12/28

In December, Cygnet Theatre will continue its eight-year tradition of presenting a holiday show suitable for all ages. This season welcomes the return of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, adapted by Sean Murray with original score by Billy Thompson. This production is a completely re-imagined take on the original holiday classic featuring lively music, unique puppets and live sound effects. The airwaves of WCYG Playhouse of the Air will be silent this season as Cygnet returns to presenting a fully staged production. This 'little musical ghost story' runs November 28-December 28 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. Opening Night for Media is Saturday, December 6, 8 pm.

Cygnet Theatre, in collaboration with Playwrights Project, is proud to present the third annual Playwrights in Process: New Play Festival. Cygnet Theatre has long been committed to celebrating human stories through the medium of live theatre. In addition to presenting four readings of new plays, the three-day festival will include three workshops for audiences, playwrights, and theatre artists. Attendees will be able to engage further with each playwright during facilitated talk-backs following the readings.

Cygnet Theatre will continue its tradition of presenting plays performed in a rotating repertory by staging two thought-provoking American classics by playwright, actor and icon Sam Shepard. The emotional and physical duo of 'Fool for Love' and 'True West' both address the American dream in powerful and passionate ways. Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray has assembled a talented cast of actors to take on these intense, disturbing and often blisteringly funny productions. Performances will be at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town, tonight, September 24th - November 2nd. Opening Day for media is October 5th at 2:00 pm (True West) & 7:00 pm (Fool For Love). San Diego's Diversionary Theatre, one of the nation's longest running LGBT theater production companies, has announced the selection of a new Executive Artistic Director, after a months' long nation-wide search. Mr. Matt Morrow will take his place at the helm of the theater in November, bringing to the job extensive experience in directing, financial development, and a stint as the Associate Artistic Director of Pittsburgh's City Theatre Company.

Cygnet Theatre has long been committed to celebrating human stories through the medium of live theatre. Playwrights in Process will present four readings of new plays by selected Southern California playwrights. The four winning plays were selected from more than 160 submissions - more than triple the number from last year - with three of the playwrights coming from the San Diego region.

Saving the most hilarious and provocative for last, Cygnet is closing their 11th season by bringing The Motherf**ker with the Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis (The Little Flower of East Orange) to San Diego for its premiere. The high-octane, verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery, is set smack in the center of New York's Hell's Kitchen. A Broadway hit that is exhilarating, hilarious and totally irreverent, this comedy/drama is also an examination of acceptance, loyalty and above all love. As is apparent from its title, this stunningly written play contains drugs, violence, sexual situations and strong f**king language. The production runs May 15th through June 22nd at the Old Town Theatre. Opening Night is tonight, May 24th.

Diversionary Theatre Now Searching for Executive Artistic Director

In October, 2013 Diversionary Theatre announced that its Executive Director was stepping down. At that time the Board of Directors took control of day-to-day operations of the theatre, and implemented a full 2014 season under the direction of Interim Executive Director and Board Treasurer Todd Nelms. This provided the Board with an opportunity to re-examine the theater's financial business model and ultimately make the decision to restructure internal staffing of the organization in order to help it evolve financially, and it is now launching a search for a new leader, with the title: 'Executive Artistic Director'.

Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray will direct Spring Awakening, an eight-time Tony Award-winning musical with an electrifying rock score by Duncan Sheik. This intoxicating story of youth and sexuality is based on an 1895 play by Frank Wedekind and features a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The production, featuring choreography by award-winning dance maker Michael Mizerany, runs March 6 through April 27 at the Old Town Theatre. Opening Night is March 15th.

Cygnet Theatre kicks off 2014 by presenting the San Diego premiere of a new comedy that stirs up powerful questions about what people are willing to sacrifice for happiness. Cygnet has snagged the rights to present the Southern California premiere of Jordan Harrison's Maple and Vine, a sensation last season Off-Broadway at New York's Playwrights Horizons. Maple and Vine is a comedy about a couple who have become allergic to their 21st century lives and decide to move into a closed-community of 1950s re-enactors who forsake their cell phones and sushi for poodle-skirts, milkmen and Tupperware parties. Performances for Maple and Vine run today, January 16th through February 16th. Opening Night is January 25th.
