Juilliard & New York Festival of Song to Present 'Harry, Hoagy, and Harold'

Juilliard and New York Festival of Song (NYFOS) present 'Harry, Hoagy, and Harold' on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at 7:30pm in Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater. The program, Juilliard's 11th presentation with NYFOS, is a tribute to three iconic American songwriters: Harry Warren, Hoagy Carmichael, and Harold Arlen. Pianist and arranger Steven Blier, a member of Juilliard's faculty and artistic director of NYFOS, performs with the singers from Juilliard's Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. The evening features sopranos Mikaela Bennett and Christine Price; mezzo-sopranos Amanda Lynn Bottoms and Kelsey Lauritano; tenors Samuel Levine and Gerard Schneider; and baritone Dimitri Katotakis. Stage direction is by Mary Birnbaum, choreography is by Adam Cates, and Chris Reynolds is the assistant pianist. The singers have been coached by guest coach Mary Testa.

Odyssey Opera Announces THE BRITISH INVASION: A Festival of English Musical Dramas

Odyssey Opera, a Boston-­??based opera company dedicated to exploring the full spectrum of adventurous repertoire, today announced THE BRITISH INVASION, a month-­??long opera festival of fully-­??staged productions of works by English composers. From May 17-­??June 20, Boston opera lovers will have the unique opportunity to choose from four evening-­??length programs encompassing nine diverse operatic works, including the Boston premiere of Vaughan Williams's Sir John in Love, a double bill of Walton's The Bear and Sullivan's The Zoo, five compelling monodramas, and Ade?s's masterpiece of modern cultural commentary, Powder Her Face. Handel's "Messiah" has been performed by The Apollo Chorus nearly every December since 1879. Few works today are as celebrated or beloved as Handel's Messiah, and this annual performance has become a holiday tradition for many Chicago families.

Opera Index presents its 2011 Distinguished Achievement Award to two pioneering Metropolitan Opera artists-tenor George Shirley and posthumously to the late mezzo-soprano Shirley Verrett-at its 27th annual black-tie winter gala on Sunday, January 16. The gala begins at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Grand Salon of the Jumeirah Essex House, the luxury hotel on Central Park South, following a reception in the Petit Salon. The awards will be presented by bass-baritone Spiro Malas. Last year's Distinguished Achievement Award recipient was soprano Patrice Munsel.
