EVITA opened last night, April 5, at the Marquis Theatre! The company of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's landmark musical is led by Ricky Martin as Che, Elena Roger in her Broadway debut as Eva Perón and Michael Cerveris as Juan Perón, along with Max von Essen as Migaldi and Rachel Potter as the Mistress. Matilda the Musical, produced by the RSC and running at the Cambridge Theatre, leads the way with ten nominations - the maximum number of eligible awards for a musical this year. These notably include a collective nomination for Best Actress for all four young actresses who play the title role. Amongst other musical theatre productions Ghost The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre and the National Theatre's London Road have five and four nominations respectively.

As previously rumored, Rob Asford confirmed today in tthe New York Times that there are still plans to bring London's Donmar Warehouse production of ANNA CHRISTIE to Broadway. Starring Jude Law and Ruth Wilson, Ashford told the NYT that 'Mr. Law and the rest of the Donmar cast would like to do the play on Broadway, but it was a matter of scheduling.'

The Evening Standard Theatre Awards, established in 1955, are presented annually for outstanding achievements in London Theatre. Sponsored by the Evening Standard newspaper, this year's awards will be announced on November 20.

Working Title Films has commenced production on Joe Wright's epic love story Anna Karenina, adapted from Leo Tolstoy's classic novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love). The film will shoot in the U.K. and Russia. Focus Features will distribute the movie domestically, and Universal Pictures International (UPI) will distribute the movie internationally.

Michael Riedel reports in today's New York Post that Jude Law is Broadway-bound next year in the hit production of ANNA CHRISTIE currently running at London's Donmar Warehouse. The show, which opened to rave reviews, is directed by Rob Ashford. The production is said to be unable to transfer immediately due to film committments, but producer Arielle Tepper Madover (whose ANNIE is Broadway-bound as well) is now raising funds to transfer the production.

Jenny Galloway and David Hayman are set to join previously announced Jude Law and Ruth Wilson in ANNA CHRISTIE at Donmar Warehouse. They will play Marthy Owens and Chris Christopherson respectively. The show will run August 4 - October 10. Rob Ashford is on board to direct the production.
