Audiences are following the yellow brick road over the rainbow to see Danielle Hope, winner of BBC TV's Over the Rainbow, play Dorothy at The London Palladium, the capital's home of the family musical. Here is a first look at the production which began previews on February 7th and which opens next week in London!
Chances are, when you hear the name Dorothy, you think of one thing and one thing only: The Wizard of Oz. This is the tagline to one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time: Wicked. Currently playing a three-week stint at the Majestic Theatre, Wicked is the the untold story of the Witches of Oz.
With rehearsals for The Wizard of Oz now well underway - and the first preview just a few days away - our Dorothy, Danielle Hope, gives us a quick tour of her dressing room, shows off her ruby slippers, and gives us a glimpse of her Dorothy outfit!
Amanda Holden is pregnant but still playing our imprisoned princess in Shrek, Dorothy seeks the Wizard, and the Open Air Theatre promises another musical extravaganza...
Talking to the UK Telegraph, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber tells the paper that The Wizard of Oz, which opens in February 2011 in London (and already has a $13+ million dollar advance) will play America next, with talks underway to do a television casting show for Dorothy as he's done in the UK. Britain's loss could be America's gain, however. 'A couple of the networks in the US have wanted to build something around what I do on TV, and I think with Oz something is definitely going to happen there. The X Factor juggernaut is going to be huge there next year but other networks are looking for something to go against it. Once we've found a Dorothy in the US, my instinct is to open the show in Kansas [Dorothy's home].'
How many times can you say 'pull my finger' before it's ripped off and eaten? A QUIET SIP OF COFFEE is the tale of 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf', as told by two men who haven't learned its lesson. This new creation by ANIMALPARTS may contain: lying for attention, wild optimism, jokes about things one should never joke about, needless rescues, and a ravenous wolf-man.

When I asked my son what part of THE WIZARD OF OZ he liked the best he said: 'All of it.' So, I pressed him a little further, and asked who his favorite character was, and he said: 'The Wicked Witch.' I can only say that I wasn't surprised by his answers, but I was surprised by his stamina, as he sat riveted by the action taking place on stage for 2 and 1/2 hours. The touring company at the Fox Theatre this weekend (November 26-28) has conjured up a solid and engaging effort that's greatly enhanced by some memorable special effects wizardry that's particularly effective during the twister sequence.
EDWARD BAKER-DULY (Tin Man), DAVID GANLY (Lion), PAUL KEATING (Scarecrow), EMILY TIERNEY (Glinda) and HANNAH WADDINGHAM (Wicked Witch of the West) are to join Michael Crawford and Danielle Hope in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production of THE WIZARD OF OZ, opening at The London Palladium in February 2011.

The Orange County Performing Arts Center's Free or All series continues this summer with the enormously popular and eagerly awaited return of free Movie Mondays on the community plaza. This year's line-up will be the biggest and best ever with five great movies: the timeless classic The Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland; the screwball comedy Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon; the Dickensian musical Oliver! being presented in partnership with public radio station KCRW-Santa Monica (89.9 FM and www.KCRW.com); the coming-of-age story Dirty Dancing featuring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze; and the inspiring documentary about New York City school students learning to dance in Mad Hot Ballroom, which was chosen in an audience poll last summer. The Center has always been 'the place' in Orange County to experience Broadway's best and brightest, and Movie Mondays offers audiences the most fun and exciting musical and dance films under the stars and all for free.
As BBC One's series 'Over The Rainbow' begins its search for a 'Dorothy' to star in Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End production of 'The Wizard of Oz', the Telegraph profiles the 20 contestants who are hoping they will be selected to fill the ruby slippers.
My mom is residing in an assisted living facility in the Northeast. To this day she often reminds me of a time seemingly implanted on her forever. Her father took her to a movie. He took her to see THE WIZARD OF OZ starring Judy Garland when Mom was nine years old. While sitting in the theater he told her to 'watch, watch now' as Dorothy opened the door to her house, and revealed the Land of Oz A land of colors, at which point the film turned from black and white to color. Mom often wears a ruby slippers pin and has spread her special connection with the film to many, even to folks outside the family. WICKED, of course, has some connections to the MGM film. However, it is based on a novel which dared to actually put a twist on many events portrayed in the classic film.
