The Steering Committee of Lower East Side History Month announces the inaugural ceremony to present the first Lower East Side Community Hero Awards. The awards are being presented to Ruth Taube, Steve Cannon, Robert Graf, Mimi Stern-Wolfe, and Detective Jaime Hernandez. Presenting the awards will be Bob Holman (Bowery Arts & Science), Carolyn Ratcliffe (Arts Loisaida), Silva Ajemian (First Street Green), Lori Weissman (LES Jewish Conservancy), David Garza (Henry Street Settlement), and the office of Councilwoman Rosie Mendez.

An annual evening to benefit TNC's Emerging Playwrights Program, this year's LOVE 'N COURAGE event featured appearances by Liliane Montevecchi, Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham, two-time Tony winner Tammy Grimes accompanied by Alex Rybeck, singer Anna Bergman accompanied by William Hicks, Austin Pendleton, Katharine Cullison, cabaret star KT Sullivan, Inma Heredia, Human Kinetics Movement Arts, Rachel Klein Dance Company, Jocab Merrick Storms, the Yip Harburg Foundation Rainbow Troupe, and Michael-David Gordon and TNC's Street Theater Company.

On November 20, Council Member Rosie Mendez, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin, and NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David J. Burney along with leaders from the four arts and service organizations that comprise 122 Community Center (AIDS Service Center NYC, Mabou Mines, Painting Space 122, and Performance Space 122) will break ground at 122 Community Center, a former public school located at 150 First Avenue. The event signals the beginning of Phase II of a $35 million city-funded construction and renovation project that will upgrade and enhance the19th century historic building and increase the space from 35,000 sq. ft. to 43,000 sq. ft.

The Oscar-winning and Tony-nominated actress Estelle Parsons was honored at La Mama's annual benefit fundraiser, along with longtime La MaMa board member Peter Swords on February 27, 2013 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre (66 E. 4 St.). Ms. Parsons, who appeared last fall at La MaMa in Marco Calvani's play THINGS OF THIS WORLD directed by Neil LaBute, and Mr. Swords, who served as a member of the La MaMa Board for 25 years, wascelebrated at the event by personal and video tributes from playwrights Warren Leight and Mr. LaBute.

On Saturday, January 26 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Theater for the New City will ceremonially burn its mortgage to celebrate becoming debt-free. The gathering, to be attended by elected officials, local activists, artists and celebrities, will include performances and the opening of an art exhibit.
Thanksgiving is a very special time at God's Love, especially this year. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy's destruction, God's Love delivered 8,000 meals to people displaced by Sandy and 2,300 emergency meal kits called "Sandy Bags" to our clients. Last week we cooked 200 meals which our friends at Douglas Elliman brought to a group of people they've 'adopted' in the Far Rockaways. More than 900 generous volunteers will join God's Love We Deliver staff, celebrities, local politicians, and board members in preparing and delivering a record 3,400 meals for people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life altering illnesses in New York City, and nearby Hudson County, New Jersey.
