The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is one step closer to readying the curtain in Symphony Park after its 'Topping Out' ceremony, held February 25, 2010. The final piece of Reynolds Hall, a staggering 50 tons of steel, was raised to complete the Carillon Bell Tower taking it to its highest point of 170 feet.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Orange County school district where varsity athletes threatened to rape and kill the female lead actress of a student production of the musical RENT has now agreed to provide harassment and discrimination prevention training to all Corona del Mar High School students, teachers and administrators and other district officials, according to a legal settlement announced this morning. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District will also apologize to the former student.

Eastenders Repertory Company closes Season 2008-2009 with PRIDE OPEN, an ensemble-created story-telling project exploring our contemporary conceptions of sexual identity. Conceived of and directed by Eastenders Founding Artistic Director and Playwright in Residence Charles E. Polly, the production features an ensemble of Eastenders company members and local performers, including Reg Clay, John Hutchinson, Rachel L. Jacobs, Suzan Kendall, Aaron Martinsen, Adeola Role and Vidya Sundaram.

RENT will be performed at Corona del Mar High School beginning April 23rd in a happy ending to a sticky and drama filled lead up to rehearsals. The production was halted by Principal Fal Asrani because of 'homosexual' content. Last week, she replaced RENT with You're A Good Man Charlie Brown as the school's upcoming spring musical.
Various online news services including Queerty.com and the NY Times Online are reporting that Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif., has cancelled a student production of RENT, due to the fact that the school's principal, Fal Asrani, objected to RENT's gay characters.
