Known for their rowdy, energetic performances, Town Mountain has spent most of 2019 on the road, playing major festivals and venues across the country, including the legendary Grand Ole Opry. On September 30, the band made their debut at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, to a sold-out crowd alongside prolific singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen and Grammy-nominee Tyler Childers. Today, JamBase premiered the band's live performance of “Down Low” featuring Childers, who co-wrote the duet with banjo player and vocalist Jesse Langlais for Town Mountain's most recent album, New Freedom Blues. “It's always a pleasure to do shows with Tyler and The Food Stamps,” Langlais explains. “We love the guys and we love the music, brothers in arms! And it's always a highlight when Tyler comes up with us and performs 'Down Low'. Especially at a venue like Red Rocks where you can just feel the energy and magic in the air.”

LanDan Consulting announces that Brad Fryman is taking on the title role in Robert Greer's new translation of August Strindberg's 'The Father' at Strindberg Rep.

Since their inception over a decade ago, Town Mountain has continuously redefined modern bluegrass, making waves in both the studio and the live music circuit; today, the band announced that they will appear on the Grand Ole Opry next Tuesday, October 16, followed by a two-night run at the legendary The Station Inn. Fans can expect to hear originals from their forthcoming album New Freedom Blues, which has been been praised by outlets like the Bluegrass Situation, SiriusXM, No Depression, American Songwriter, and Rolling Stone, who named the group anArtist You Need to Know. On Wednesday, The Boot premiered "One Drop In The Bottle" the fourth and newest single from the album. Set for release on October 26, New Freedom Blues is available for pre-order today via iTunes. Town Mountain are currently touring the Southeast and will tour with Tyler Childers in December (full dates below).
From August 27 to September 4, August Strindberg Rep will perform Strindberg's 'Creditors' in a new translation by Robert Greer as part of the Dream Up Festival at Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave. This masterpiece from Strindberg's naturalist period is rarely excelled in its unity of construction, dramatic tension and acute psychological analysis, but it is far less performed and anthologized than 'The Father' or 'Miss Julie.' During an afternoon in a lounge at a seaside resort, a revenge is played out as a credulous artist has his mind poisoned against his wife by her former husband. Translator Robert Greer directs.
It was inevitable, perhaps, that our post-truth politics would seep into 21st century absurdist theater. One sunny example is 'Occasionally Nothing' by Natalie Menna, which takes us to a dismal time-to-come when something can become a profound, obvious nothing. Life becomes the time in between the sometimes which sometimes happen. The piece won awards in Planet Connections Festivity for developmental staging's, with critics cheering the playwright for her mastery of Theater of the Absurd. Theater for the New City's Dream Up festival will present the work September 8 to 16. Ivette Dumeng directs.

Today, Town Mountain announces their return with their sixth studio album, New Freedom Blues. Set for release October 5, 2018, producer Caleb Klauder joined the band at Asheville's legendary Echo Mountain Studios late last year to record the 11-track masterpiece, which features drummer and Sturgill Simpson collaborator Miles Miller, as well as a duet and co-write with Tyler Childers. Along with the official album announcement, the album's first single and title track, “New Freedom Blues” premiered exclusively today via BGS. Town Mountain is currently touring the U.S. throughout late summer and will appear at Ossipee Valley Music Festival, Soulshine Festival, and Wheatland Music Festival (full dates below).
August Strindberg Rep's production of Strindberg's 'Creditors,' which was scheduled for May 16 to June 2, 2018 at Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street, has been postponed until the summer. The reason for the postponement is to enable an extension for a sister company at Gene Frankel Theatre. Wheelhouse Theatre's production of 'Happy Birthday Wanda June' is expanding into a longer run at the venue.

Even people familiar with August Strindberg may be surprised to learn that he wrote plays for children. The best example is 'The Black Glove,' his final Chamber Play. Its place in history has been obscured by a historical fluke: it premiered in 1911, after the close of Strindberg's Intimate Theater, which it was written for. This kept it out of many anthologies.
Even people familiar with August Strindberg may be surprised to learn that he wrote plays for children. The best example is 'The Black Glove,' the fifth (and least performed) of his Chamber Plays.

August Strindberg Rep is appearing for the first time in Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival with the English language premiere of a new play from Iceland, GUILTY, by noted contemporary Icelandic playwright Hrafnhidur Hagalin, translated By Salka Gudmundsdottir, running from September 5 to 17.
Iceland in the 19th Century was not exactly an idyll; it was an island nation of farming and fishing communities, pretty much cut off from the much of the rest of the world. Crime was rare and capital crimes rarer still. So the country's criminal cases have become the stuff of legend, including the child rape case in Rifsaedasel of 1837, which is as infamous to Icelanders as The Manson Family is to Americans. Contemporary Icelandic playwright Hrafnhildur Hagalin revisits this infamous case with 'Guilty' (2014), a verse play that gracefully and provocatively examines issues of obsession and mercy which cling to it to this day.
