It's that time of year, and I can't help but wonder if your CD collection and iPod are Tonys ready. It's just a handful of hours until the 69th annual Tony Awards, which will be broadcast live on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at 8/7c on CBS. This Broadway season has some exciting contenders in the musical categories, and to get you ready for the big night, I'm recapping the albums you should be listening to (or at least pre-ordering).
Before Broadway's biggest night on Sunday, June 7th, 37 productions will have opened on Broadway in the 2014-15 season. Of those productions, 10 were eligible for Best New Musical and 11 were eligible for Best New Play at the 69th Annual Tony Awards. In these new plays and musicals, 213 actors made their Broadway debuts in new shows.
For the first time since 1983 with LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, an Off-Broadway musical, HAMILTON, has won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical! The 60th Annual Drama Desk awards took place Sunday night, Sunday, May 31st at 8pm at The Town Hall (123 W. 43rd Street). The gala evening CELEBRATED the 2015 season's outstanding dance and choreography on Broadway and film. Winners included Leanne Cope for Best Female Dancer, Robert Fairchild and Tony Yazbeck (tie) for Best Male Dancer and Christopher Wheeldon and Joshua Bergasse (tie) for Best Choreography.
