Brentano String Quartet to Play The Wallis

Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts ("The Wallis") presents Brentano String Quartet for a program of chamber music on Saturday, May 9 at 8:00 pm in the Bram Goldsmith Theatre. The Brentano members are Mark Steinberg, violin; Serena Canin, violin; Misha Amory, viola; and Nina Lee, cello. The program will feature Haydn's String Quartet in B flat major, Op. 50, No. 1; Bartok's String Quartet No. 3 (1927); and Debussy's String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10.
Violinist Itamar Zorman to Release Debut Album, 2/10

Profil Hänssler will release violinist Itamar Zorman's debut album, Portrait, in the US on February 10, 2015, distributed by Naxos. This personal album, described as 'pure matter of the heart' (Concerti), captures Zorman's unique communicative power, revealing astounding artistic maturity along with an impressive range of repertoire interests and technical refinement. The works on the album include Messiaen (Theme and Variations), Schubert (Rondo in B minor, D 895), Chausson (Poème, Op. 25), Hindemith (Sonata for violin solo, Op. 31 No. 1), and Brahms (Violin Sonata in D minor, Op. 108). Award-winning Korean pianist Kwan Yi performs with Zorman on the album. Portrait was released in Europe to critical acclaim on August 4, 2014. Zorman's upcoming concerts include a recital at Union College in Schenectady, NY with Kwan Yi on February 15 and performances with Richard Goode & Friends at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on February 18 and Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in New York on February 22.
Richard Goode Returning to Carnegie Hall for Series of Concerts & Master Class

Carnegie Hall presents the esteemed pianist Richard Goode in four concerts this winter and spring, beginning with two programs of chamber music in Zankel Hall, featuring performances with young musicians mentored by Mr. Goode at the Marlboro Music Festival. On Sunday, February 22 at 3:00 p.m., Mr. Goode is joined by soprano Sarah Shafer, violinist Itamar Zorman, violist Kyle Armbrust, and cellist Brook Speltz for a program to include Brahms's Piano Quartet No. 2 in A Major, Op. 26 and Schumann's Piano Trio No. 2 in F Major, Op. 80. Pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute joins Mr. Goode, Mr. Zorman, Mr. Armbrust, and Ms. Speltz on Thursday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. for an all-French program with works by Debussy, Faure, and Ravel.

Cleveland Orchestra's Principal Clarinetist Franklin Cohen to Retire in 2015

The Cleveland Orchestra today announced that Franklin Cohen, Principal Clarinet since 1976, will retire from the ensemble in the summer of 2015. After 39 seasons, Mr. Cohen will have had the longest tenure of any solo clarinetist in the orchestra's history. The title of Principal Clarinet Emeritus will be bestowed on Mr. Cohen next summer upon retiring. He will be the first Cleveland Orchestra musician officially recognized with this honor.

DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin announced the news Wednesdayevening at a special event at New York's SubCulture celebrating his 70th birthday where Yu was in attendance. Slatkin will conduct the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall this weekend in a program featuring Copland, Rouse and Ravel.

Superb violinist Itamar Zorman, described as a "virtuoso of emotions" (Goettinger Tageblatt), will make his Carnegie Hall recital debut as part of Carnegie Hall's Distinctive Debuts Series at Weill Recital Hall (154 West 57th St.) on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 7:30pm. Zorman was recently awarded the 2014 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, the 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and in 2011 was one of two top prize winners at the Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition. His program, with pianist Kwan Yi, will include J.S. Bach's Solo Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Major; Schnittke's Violin Sonata No. 2, "Quasi una sonata;" Hindemeth's Solo Violin Sonata, Op. 31, No. 1; and Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 3 in D Minor. The Hindemith and Brahms are included on Zorman's debut album, which also features music by Messiaen, Schubert, and Chausson, released in Europe by Profil-Editions Gunther Hanssler in spring 2014 (CDs available upon request).
