New Amsterdam Singers Present A CHILD IN WINTER 12/9, 12/11

The New Amsterdam Singers, led by Clara Longstreth, opens its 44th season with a program entitled A Child in Winter, featuring David Lang's 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion, the New York Premiere of Steven Sametz's Niño de Rosas, and works by Abbie Betinis, Morten Lauridsen, Vytautas Miškinis, and J.S. Bach's motet, Jesu, meine Freude.

A.C.T. and SFSFF Host Silent Film Fridays for ONCE IN A LIFETIME

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) will partner with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival (SFSFF) to present screenings of short silent films before select Friday night performances of its season opener, Once in a Lifetime, the madcap Kaufman and Hart comedy about how the movies learned to talk.

The concert will take place on Sunday, March 13 at 4 p.m. at The Church of the Holy Trinity, 316 East 88th Street.

The New Amsterdam Singers, led by Music Director Clara Longstreth, will present 'Bach to Betinis,' a program featuring rarely-heard works for double chorus, at the chorus's first concerts of the season. The works include Josef Rheinberger's seldom performed magnum opus Mass in E flat, written in 1878 for double chorus a cappella, and the beloved J. S. Bach motet Komm, Jesu, komm. Familiar works of Poulenc (Hodie Christus natus est) and Verdi (Ave Maria) will also be performed, as well as three New York premieres. The concerts will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 122 East 88th Street at Lexington Avenue, on Friday, December 10 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, December 12 at 4 p.m.

With ticket prices remaining at $10 for all seats, a night of dance is more affordable than a night at the movies. The festival will include world and U.S. premieres, and will feature several companies making their first U.S. appearances.

Ronald Perera's Earthsongs, a cycle of six poems by E. E. Cummings, was written in 1983 for women's voices, and was recently rearranged by the composer for mixed voices.
