Legendary songwriter Irving Berlin (1888-1989) was so fanatical about his privacy that in his lifetime he prevented anyone from dramatizing his life. 'They can do what they want after I'm dead,' he declared. Since Berlin's passing, ASCAP award-winning writer/director Chip Deffaa has written no less than five different shows about Berlin, developing them at the 13th Street Theater in New York City.
The premiere recording of ASCAP award-winning writer/director Chip Deffaa's musical play 'Irving Berlin: In Person,' which was developed at the 13th Street Theater in New York City, will be released June 3rd. Jed Peterson, who's starred Off-Broadway in such shows as 'Hard Times' and 'Nevsky Prospect,' and has been featured on television's 'Madame Secretary,' stars as Mr. Berlin. Cabaret Artist, Solo Performer and Stand Up Comic, D'yan Forest's new solo show, A Broad Abroad! will have its New York City Premiere at the 10th Annual FRIGID Festival on February 16th. The critically acclaimed solo show, which was written by D'yan Forest and Erik Kornfeld, premiered at The Orlando Fringe Festival last May. D'yan Forest performs her unique style of stand up, regularly at the Gotham Comedy Club in NYC. She also performs her solo shows in New York, throughout the US and in Paris. Erik Kornfeld, who has written for Bette Midler and for The Rosie O'Donnel Show, directs.

The original cast album for Chip Deffaa's musical play 'Irving Berlin & Co.' (published by Eldridge Plays and Musicals) will be released December 21st. Linda Amiel Burns is about to launch the May/June 2015 edition of her Singing Experience Workshop and still has openings for intrepid singers, whether pros who need polishing or newcomers who need nurturing. As Burns says, “Whatever level you are at, The Singing Experience is for you.” With Musical Director/Accompanist Richard Danley at the piano, the six-session May/June 2015 workshop—called HIT PARADE—will include four rehearsals at Studio 353 (353 West 48th Street) on Thursday evenings, May 21, May 28, June 4, and June 11, from 6:30-9:30 pm. The performance show, in which the participants perform solos and group numbers in front of friends, family, and cabaret lovers, is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17 at Stage 72 (The Triad) at 7:30 pm. The group holds a “DVD Viewing Party” of the show on June 17, 7-10 pm.

The 13th Street Repertory Theater will honor the woman widely considered to be the world's greatest blues singer by making Sunday, April 19th, 'Bessie Smith Day.' The theater will be offering free admission to its new hit show, 'Mad About the Boy' (which includes a tribute to Smith) to anyone who can sing a chorus of a song recorded by Smith. ASCAP award-winning playwright/director Chip Deffaa, who's created and produced 'Mad About the Boy,' will also award prizes to those who do the best job of singing Smith's songs.
