A new critical war has broken out over Pasek and Paul's Dogfight, currently receiving its European premiere at the Southwark Playhouse. The story of a group of young marines making a bet as to who can get a date with the ugliest girl has been denounced as misogynist by some observers.
Even as ritual humiliation goes, this is particularly cruel: a group of US marines, in San Francisco for one last night in 1963 before they head to war, initiate a game whereby each must lure the least attractive girl they can find to a party, with money in the pot for whoever brings the 'ugliest' date. Though fairly simplistic, the premise of Dogfight - making its European debut at the Southwark Playhouse - is an instantly intriguing one and a highly effective set up for the pathos that's to come.
The European première of the musical Dogfight, produced by Danielle Tarento, the award-winning producer of Titanic, Parade and Mack & Mabel, and directed by Matt Ryan, plays The Large at Southwark Playhouse for a six-week season from tonight 8 August to Saturday 13 September.
